Flourishing in Trentino and Toscana
J. Hofstätter, Canalicchio di Sopra

Of Trentino and Toscana: Hofstatter & Canalicchio di Sopra
Hofstatter EstateSome grape varieties just seem truly destined to flourish in a particular environment. Pinot Bianco produces some of the best white wines of Trentino-Alto Adige, while Sangiovese is indisputably king in Toscana.

Favored for its locale between the Adige River and the hills of the Alps, the vineyards of Trentino-Alto Adige in the northernmost part of "the boot" benefit from warm summers and cool Alpine breezes--perfect for growing the region's whites like Pinot Bianco. Along the hilly slopes of the J. Hofstätter estate, established in 1907 by the Foradori-Hofstätter family, grows some of the highest quality Pinot Bianco in the region.

In Toscana, the Canalicchio di Sopra estate's Sangiovese also reflects its terroir. When Primo Pacenti founded the estate in 1962, he merely had a love for the land and Sangiovese. On the estate's nearly 70 acres, 15 are dedicated to vineyards where Sangiovese is the sole variety grown. Located in northern Montalcino, the limited exposure to the cooling breezes of the Mediterranean help produce wines of great definition and ripened fruit. "Our philosophy is to make wine in the vines more than in the winery," said Francesco Ripaccioli, Canalicchio di Sopra winemaker and grandson of Primo. "We came from the land, so this is very important to us."

Still family-owned, J. Hofstätter and Canalicchio di Sopra produce some of the finest white and red wine of Trentino-Alto Adige and Toscana, respectively. We're pleased to offer you J. Hofstätter's Pinot Bianco from the 2009 vintage and the Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2008.

Hofstatter Pinot Bianco 2009J. Hofstätter
Pinot Bianco 2009, 750ml, $26.56
Winemaker Martin Foradori Hofstätter brings out the very best in this Pinot Bianco. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, this medium- to full-bodied wine shows off all the characteristics of a pure Pinot Bianco bottling. Straw-colored, full of floral perfumes and aromas of apples and pears, the wine even exhibits some zesty acidity and subtle hints of honey and nuts on the palate. This white complements polenta, salted pork and gnocchi.

Canalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino 2008Canalicchio di Sopra
Rosso di Montalcino 2008, 750ml, $31.00**
Often considered Brunello's "little brother," Rosso di Montalcino is usually not aged in oak as long as Brunello's minimum of three years. The grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, macerate on skins for 15 to 20 days and spend eight more months in Slavonian oak with an additional year in bottle. The result is a deep, ruby red wine that's fruity and elegant with an intense aroma. This Rosso di Montalcino is the most recent release from the Canalicchio di Sopra estate and is ready to drink now through 2022.
