A Note from Sergio
Working alongside his family, Marco Fantinel runs an empire. But just as Rome wasn't built in a day, neither was the current Fantinel business. It took about forty years for three generations of the Fantinel family to expand from a single restaurant, a couple of hotels and a modest vineyard in the Colli sub-zone of Friuli to its current status of owning twenty restaurants throughout central and northern Italy, producing the very fine Prosciutto di San Daniele, owning vineyards in three of Friuli's sub-zones, and making some of the best wine to come out of the region. And amid all of this making of food and wine, the family has also owned three separate Italian soccer teams, the most recent being Friuli's Triestina Calcio, which Stefano Fantinel acquired in 2006.
There is something unique about the synergy of the Fantinel businesses. In many ways, they don't so much produce the wine, make the food, and create a place to serve it than compose the ultimate Italian lifestyle. "We are very much connected to Italian lifestyle," Marco said to me over a bottle of Friulano and a plate of Prosciutto. "Italians love culture. Football, wine, food--it's a fantastic and wonderful combination of Italy."
In choosing to make the simple elements of Italian life--wine, ham, football, and osteria--the Fantinels have made traditional Italian life their enterprise, and their lifeblood. "People in Italy go to osteria," Marco said, "they go there everyday, drink wine, read the newspaper, and focus on soccer. So this means we try to make good wine, good ham, and put people around the table to talk about culture. This is where life happens in Italy."
The world imagines that this laid-back café culture is how Italians live, and this picture gives the impression that Italians are not hardworking. This impression quickly evaporates like morning mist if you spend any time with Marco (or any real time in Italy). It's ironic that he and all his family work so hard at providing Italian leisure. "To work with passion" is his family's motto. "We Friuli are hard workers. People are serious, keen to work, and it's our desire to show this passion for working hard, to respect our land and our traditions. Our future is to keep and emphasize the traditions of Friuli for global market." Fantinel has long proven its commitment to Friuli--they've been on the forefront of cultivating indigenous Friulian grapes like the tender Picolit, the unusual Rofosco, and the controversial Tocai Friuliano.
I really like the Fantinel wines. But what I like more is their passion--their passion for work, their passion for Friuli, their passion for soccer, and their passion to bring it all together in a way that shows their passion for Italy and their passion for life. It's with great pleasure I offer you the wines of Fantinel this week, wines that I hope you'll love, and I also offer you the chance to have dinner with Marco at a special event at IWM in New York. Chef Kevin Sippel will be going all out, but that's the least we can do for a man who runs an empire.

Winemaker Dinner with Marco Fantinel

Price: $179.00
Winemaker, entrepreneur, altruist--Marco Fantinel defines the word "dynamic." Meet the man and experience his superhuman energy when you join us for a sumptuous dinner and sparkling conversation with Marco Fantinel, President of the Fantinel Group, a family-run business devoted to the crafting of the best of Friulian wines and foods. Our dinner must reflect our guest, and our Chef Kevin Sippel plans to craft his interpretations of Friulian dishes like Poached Egg with Polenta and Prosciutto, Squash Gnocchi in Toasted Broth, Braised Veal Cheek with Snails and Turnips-as well as selections from our own Salumeria. All evening, guests will enjoy flights of wines from Fantinel and La Roncaia, the wineries of the Fantinel group, while in casual conversation with their winemaker. It's an evening of fun, cheer, delicious food, fabulous wine, and exciting conversation--and it's an evening you don't want to miss. Featured Wines
La Roncaia
Refosco 2006, 750ml, $42.00
The wine that inspired an ad hoc fan club at an IWM HK Fantinel tasting dinner last year, this appassimento-style wine is made from partially dried grapes, resulting in an intense, deceptively dry, wine. Bright red, offering bunches of ripe dark fruit, balanced and big, this Refosco will make you believe in the indigenous grapes of Friuli. Drinking now.
La Roncaia
Friulano 2007, 750ml, $32.25
Crafted from one-half grapes that are fresh and one-half grapes that have been raisined, this wine is a deep straw yellow, and that cheery color is echoed in its nose that suggests wildflowers, hay and almonds. Smooth and well-balanced on the palate, La Roncaia's Friulano '07 displays notes of citrus, tropical fruit and nuts, and its slightly bitter finish makes it an astonishingly food-friendly wine.
La Roncaia
Sauvignon Blanc Eclisse 2008, 750ml, $29.75
A blend of primarily Sauvignon Blanc touched with a soupcon of barrique-aged Picolit, La Roncaia's Eclisse throws enchanting aromas of lime, green olive and white flowers. The palate echoes the citrus, adds green tea, and finishes with a charming swipe of salinity. Lyrical, unusual and drinking now.
Fantinel
Friulano Sant'Helena 2009, 750ml, $22.13
The Sant'Helena Friulano has a mouth-feel like a honeyed velvet glove, but its slightly bitter nut finish complicates it. Unlike the La Roncaia Friulano, this version is crafted from only fresh grapes, and this choice puts into high relief the wildflower and citrus nose and its lychee and peach-pit palate. Fantastic with prosciutto and cheese, this wine is drinking now.
Fantinel
Prosecco Brut Extra Dry NV, 750ml, $16.00
Take a walk on the soft side with this velvety Prosecco, a bright, lively wine that's quite elegant, with delightful floral aromas. Straw yellow and kissed by tropical fruits, this versatile Prosecco can serve as an aperitif, a complement to food, or lightly sweet palate cleanser before dinner.
