The 2007 Barolos of Sandrone and Scavino

A Look Towards the New Girl Order

Sandrone & Scavino Barolo

A Note from Sergio

Barolo has this distinctly masculine personality. It's a brooding wine, one that's often called "intellectual" for its demanding austerity. Barolo is, after all, the "King of Wines and the Wine of Kings." But there's a major shift in the making. Old masters are getting older, and they're ceding control not to their sons, but to their daughters. Barolo is, in short, undergoing a female revolution.

When Barolo legend Bartolo Mascarello passed away, he left his legacy to his daughter Maria Teresa. Bruno Giacosa has just about turned over control of the estate to his daughter, Bruna. Angelo Gaja's heir apparent is his aptly named daughter Gaia. And Giuseppe Rinaldi's daughter Marta has recently joined her father both in the cellar and on the road, appearing at an IWM dinner to speak about the estate's wines. If Barolo has always been a boys' game, the playing field is beginning to look very different, for the estates I've named aren't lesser known entities--they're the Barolo old guard, and soon all these estates will be run by women.

Today, I'm offering the new releases from two more estates that are part of the Barolo New Girl Order: Luciano Sandrone and Paolo Scavino. Luciana Sandrone is poised to take over for her father, whose iconoclastic, heady Barolos escape any neat distinction between traditional and modern. And Enrica Scavino has already made a significant mark on her father Enrico's estate.

Italy only looks like a man's world, and I've often written about how it's actually women who hold the power here. As the father of two daughters, I'm glad to see strong, capable women doing well and making great wines. Certainly, these '07 releases augur well for the future; this is a stunning collection of wines with a range of personalities, each one unique. If you're a man, open a bottle and toast to the women in your life. And if you're a woman, toast to your own power. You've worked hard and you've earned it.

Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2007
Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2007 750ml
Price: $128.99

Masculine notes of tar, smoke, new saddle and earth underlie this wine's bed of roses, violets and deep, dark, rich, ripe fruit. Standing like a victorious toreador strewn with flowers, this '07 Barolo holds a dizzying range of grace, power, vitality, virility and beauty. The nose may seduce you, and the palate may make you fall in love, but the silky tannins will pull you back to the glass. Cellar for a few years but drink for three decades.
Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi 2007
Paolo Scavino Barolo Cannubi 2007 750ml
Price: $128.99

Big, bold, brooding and bewitching, this '07 Barolo Cannubi weaves a spell of dark, delicious magic. An ever-evolving kaleidoscope of flavors reveal themselves as the wine opens up in the glass--ripe, opulent fruit; telltale notes of smoke, violets and tar; and a wafting of licorice and cardamom all shift and morph in the nose and mouth. Velvety tannins linger, even as the magical finish fades. Drinking in a few years for the next two-to-three decades, possibly longer.
Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio 2007
Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio 2007 750ml
Price: $99.99

The most feminine, pretty Barolo in this beautiful bunch is also the most approachable. The '04 Bricco Ambrogio shines with the warmth, the charm, and the nostalgia of a perfect June day. Floral aromatics, vibrant cherries and berries, just a touch of tar-brushed earth, and a dusting of warm spices typify this wine, whose balance and harmony are so deft as to look easy. Drinking soon and for the next two decades.
Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric 2007
Paolo Scavino Barolo Carobric 2007 750ml
Price: $99.99

Like a glorious firecracker in the sky, the '07 Carobric has a pyrotechnic personality. Floral, spice and earth perfume shoot up with an almost stealthy grace; wild cherries and frutti de bosco explode on the palate; and a tannic finish lingers and then falls gently as sparks. This wine would like a couple of years in the cellar, but then it will drink gorgeously for the next few decades.

This is the original Blanc de Blancs created from a single grape variety, Chardonnay, from a single source, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. In just over one century, these exclusive bubbles have only been created in only 41 vintages. IWM sees it as only fitting to launch our Vintage Winemaker Series in both New York and Aspen with the rare and iconic Champagne Salon, along with their sister house Champagne Delamotte, the fifth-oldest in the region.

Jean-Baptiste Cristini of Champagne Salon-Champagne Delamotte and IWM will lead this five-course dinner and tasting where guests will be among the first in the country to experience the highly anticipated release from the 1999 vintage, alongside vintage gems that date back to 1983. The menu, prepared by IWM's own Chef Kevin Sippel, will feature small plate cuisine from around the world to accent the versatility, ageability and depth of Champagne Salon. Eat, drink, converse and enjoy the ineffable sophistication and indisputable beauty of Champagne Salon and Champagne Delamotte with IWM.
