The Recent Releases of Aldo Conterno: Barolo's Beauty in a Bottle

A Note from Sergio

The hills around Barolo look like God reached down and put his fingers in a lush green pie. The land undulates with the whorls of an extreme close-up of a fingerprint. Every slope is lined like ruled paper with rows and rows of vines, each plot showing mathematical precision, fitting together like pieces of a laser-cut jigsaw puzzle. There's a dizzying sense in Barolo--on your approach, it doesn't look as if it's so high, so round, or so confusing--but atop every hillside there's this tumbling sense of rolling down and falling into a great, green goddess's lap.

It's easy to lose your sense of direction, to tell one great slope from another, to point accurately to Romirasco, to Bussia, to Cicala. Driving around Barolo, I'm always struck with the same thought: If there was ever a landscape that looks like it should make great wines, Barolo is it. If only in this one case, looks are not deceiving. Some of the world's greatest wines come from Barolo, and many of the world's greatest winemakers have gravitated there, pulled by the sheer force of its terroir, its challenges, its rewards, and its beauty.

It's easy to talk about a vineyard's terroir, what the soil is made of and how the tectonic plates shifted to offer up fresh earth in one vineyard and old earth in another. It's easy to talk about how those fresh soils grow grapes that make elegant, feminine wines, while those older soils grow grapes that make austere, brooding wines. It's easy to measure a ten-degree temperature difference from the bottom of a slope to the top, and to show a correlation between the opulence of the wines at the bottom and the finesse of the wines at the top. But you don't really get it, Barolo's magic of nature, of fate, of impenetrable history and of human ingenuity, until you visit, and the more you visit, the more it just floors you. Barolo is beautiful beyond words. So too are its wines, when crafted by the hands of a master.

This week, I'm delighted to offer the new releases of Aldo Conterno, a winemaker who has spent his whole life in Barolo and knows it intimately. Aldo is one of those winemakers who defies easy categorization--he's neither strictly traditional, nor is he modernist--and whose wines are so good that easy definitions cease to matter. He makes wines because he loves to make them; the land, the weather and the terroir dictate his practices, ultimately, and even if Barolo looks like a place that should make great wines, Aldo year in and year out proves that it does. In fact, it makes celestial wines.

Aldo's Barolos require a little patience, but when you're ready to open a bottle, take your time with it. It's a wine that took millennia in the making, even as it captures in its glass a year in the life of a vineyard. Eternity never tasted so good--and as Aldo's Barolo crosses your palate, neither does transience.

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Romirasco 2006
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Romirasco 2006 750ml
Price: $169.00

While Aldo Conterno only produces the Romirasco Barolo in vintages when he doesn't feel the conditions are ideal enough for his famed Granbussia, this Barolo is still one of incredible appeal and structure. This dark colored wine has a traditional nose of flowers, earth, tar and smoke, followed by a medium-bodied palate of smooth, mouth filling tannins and acidity. Incredibly rare, and fantastically rich, Romirasco Barolo is an exercise in precision, restraint and beauty.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2006
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2006 750ml
Price: $131.69

This ’06 Cicala has all the exoticism, poise, and elegance of a Chinese fan dancer—and it’s one beautiful, feminine Barolo. Pretty posies appear in the nose, while the palate features handfuls of ripe strawberries and wild cherries drizzled with balsamic vinegar, a waft of smoke, and a dusting of warm spices. Velvety tannins last for days in this wine’s smoldering finish. Drinking now to the next two to three decades.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2006
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2006 750ml
Price: $76.36

This is one pretty, pretty Barolo, a fresh-faced, cherry-cheeked wine whose purity and innocence will seduce and delight. Lots of frutti di bosco, a kiss of spice and earth, a waft of tar and smoke, and velvety tannings make this very approachable Barolo an absolute pleasure. Drinking now, and why not?
Rocche dei Manzoni Quatr Nas 1998
Rocche dei Manzoni Quatr Nas 1998, 750ml
Price: $49.95

To drink the ’98 Quatr Nas is like running silk brocade over your tongue in a room perfumed with dried flowers. The wine has a delicately floral nose touched with roses and violets that complements its palate of dried plums, hawthorn berries, brambly blackberries and a profusion of herbs. Thrumming underbrush and rich mocha provide a counterpoint, and balanced tannins linger endlessly. A sumptuous experience, this wine is drinking now.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2007
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2007 750ml
Price: $79.99

The ’07 Barolos have garnered a reputation for being generous, open, even genial bottles of wine, and Aldo Conterno’s basic Barolo is no exception. Crafted from grapes grown on twenty-year-old vines, this ’07 has a warm, expressive, welcoming nose that ushers you towards a fresh palate laden with fruit, dusted with spices and held in a harmonious, graceful body. There’s not much here that isn’t splendid, and this ’07 drinking for the next couple of decades.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2007 1500ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2007 1500ml
Price: $309.99

It has lines that speak of timeless yet modernist elegance: Conterno’s Cicala possesses the architectural structure of building by Le Corbusier. It’s an impressively weighty wine with fantastic tannins and a streak of steely minerality that’s balanced by earthy notes of violets, smoke and saddle. A Barolo for wine lovers who have patience and an appreciation for gravitas, this ’07 needs five years in the cellar, but then it’ll drink for two or more decades.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello 2007 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Colonnello 2007 750ml
Price: $134.99

With the dark, voluptuous beauty of Crystal Renn, the ’07 Colonnello is opulent, silky, sophisticated and devastatingly yummy. Bunches of rain-splattered roses and violets greet the nose; ripe, lush fruit lying atop a bed of earth, spice and tar appear on the palate; and a lingering balanced finish resounds like a gong. An exceptional, approachable and elegant wine, this ’07 should start drinking in five years and last for at least the next two decades.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Conca Tre Pile Barbera d'Alba 2008
Poderi Aldo Conterno Conca Tre Pile Barbera d'Alba 2008 750ml
Price: $35.99

It is possible to be elegant and plummy both at once, and this surprisingly opulent Barbera from Aldo Conterno shows you how it’s done. Barbera’s trademark mouth-watering acidity is here to tantalize the tongue, but so too are loads of black cherries, ripe plums, nutmeg and smoke. It’s a velvety tannic trip through early autumn in Piemonte in a glass, and it’s drinking wonderfully.
