While the Verdi estates production of grapes dates back to its establishment in Oltrepò Pavese in the 18th century, vinification was not pursued until the third generation, and estate bottling commenced only after World War II, under the leadership of Bruno Verdi. Paolo Verdi, Brunos son, currently heads the estate and has facilitated the winerys modernization through a formal protocol. Such efforts, however, have enabled him to improve upon, rather than displace, traditional methods, and he is particularly vigilant about employing his viticultural regime to elicit the best expression of Oltrepò Paveses local varieties.
The estates holdings are situated on hillsides and each site possesses conditions that are particularly conducive to the growth of their respective varieties. In addition to Paveses native Croatina, Uva Rara, and Ughetta, the winery cultivates Pinot Noir in its Casa Zoppini Vineyard and Riesling Renano in the Vigna Costa and Paradiso sites. The premier cru is Cavariola, the source of Verdis Oltrepò Pavese Rosso Riserva. A blend of Croatina (65 percent), Uva Rara (20 percent), Ughetta (10 percent), and Barbera (5 percent), this intriguing red exhibits a firm structure underneath its blackberry and mineral character.
