The Wines of Campania

Wines of CampaniaWhile Aglianico headlines the red varieties, Piedirosso, with which it is frequently blended, is acquiring greater recognition; many producers, in fact, craft single-varietal bottlings of the grape. Casavecchia and Pallagrello are two of the other recovered varietals, focused on exclusively by Vestini Campagnano. In general, the reds tend to be quite powerful in expression, while the whites, in contrast, are far less demonstrative, yet display an enervating acidity. While many, like Greco di Tufa and Falanghina, are mild in flavor some, particularly Fiano, project rather stirring aromatics. All are generally marked by restraint—lending them a particular affinity with food.

Taburno Aglianico Rosato 2009 De Conciliis Selim Spumante Brut NV
Fermented in stainless steel then aged in large oak casks and barrique, the Aglianico Rosato is lighter than the more broadly-structured red version of the variety. The wine offers good acidity with bright cherry and flowers on the palate and is perfectly paired with meat and light sauces The De Conciliis family are big fans of jazz-reversing the letters of Selim, the first sparkler made in Campania, gives you  "Miles," a name instantly recognizable to any music buff.  Crafted from Fiano and Aglianico, two grapes indigenous to Campania, this spumante is made in the charmat method. The yellow-green Selim itself has a refreshing nose of tropical and citrus fruits, peach and apple. Intense, unusual and beautifully balanced, Selim is a fitting tribute to its namesake. Drink now.

De Conciliis Oro Greco di Tufo 2008 Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2006
You can tell by its name that Greco ("Greek") originated in Greece. An import to southern Italy more than 2,500 years ago, the Greco grape is often compared to Viognier because of its subtle fruit and herbaceous aromatics. The sun-filled mountains on the De Conciliis estate produce optimally-ripened fruit. The most recent Greco di Tufo on the market, this full-bodied, dry white has pronounced minerals and acidity with notes of almond, peach and pear on the palate. From the volcanic slopes of Campania, this little estate is a recent phenomenon. Compelling aromas of smoke, tar and dark fruits with superb intensity and depth.
Imparato Montevetrano 2006, 750ml Petrolo Galatrona 2005, 750ml
Our Price: $100.33
Our Price: $113.85
Imparato Montevetrano 2006 Petrolo Galatrona 2005
Campania's answer to the Super-Tuscan trend, this rich wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the indigenous Aglianico.  Soft and round with copious amounts of  ripe fruit and a hint of spice. The 2006 will not be ready to enjoy for a few more years but will be rewarding if held on to and enjoyed down the road. In the 2005 vintage, Galatrona continues to demonstrate why it belongs to the cadre that includes Massetto, Redigaffi, and Messorio: While the wine initially delays gratification, seemingly a studied rendition beholden to the vintage’s direction, its reticence serves as merely a polite introduction. With a preliminary period in the glass, Galatrona readily dispenses with its demure attitude and becomes the extrovert that we all know it to be—an uninhibited and voluptuous expression that inexplicably delivers the intricacy and detail of wines that are regarded as the epitome of structural form.
Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2002, 750ml Mastroberardino Villa dei Misteri 2002, 1500ml
Our Price: $127.10
Our Price: $264.00
Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2002 Mastroberardino Villa dei Misteri 2002
Mastroberardino made history in 1996 when he reintroduced viticulture to the city of Pompeii. With the grapes he farmed, he created Villa di Misteri (misteri translating to mysteries in English). What Mastroberardino created was a bright ruby red wine, full of complexities but with an excellent tannin and weight structure. On the palate is intense red fruit and spice, characteristics typical of grapes from the coastal Campanian region.
Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2005, 3000ml

Galardi Terra di Lavoro 2005
Top wine consultant Riccardo Cotarella personally validated Campania's ancient vines in what has become one of the region's most definitive and sought-after expressions, Terra di Lavoro. In Cotarella 's earlier efforts, most notably Montevetrano (1991), he had been reticent to work with grapes that had yet to establish themselves, preferring to keep to his standard (and proven) Bordeaux set, making only a slight admission (10 percent) for Aglianico. In Terra di Lavoro, he kept Bordeaux out of the picture, not only giving Aglianico the lead (80 percent) but also sourcing contributing support from frequent partner Piedirosso (20).
