AlthoughBrunellos are generally regarded as more pronounced in character thanthe wines of Chianti, such a generic and broad description is moreconvenient than it is accurate. Distinctions in climate and soilbetween the northern and southern parts of the Montalcino zone accountfor important differences. The northern zone, the area relative toCanalicchio, evidences a cooler climate than that of its southerncounterpart; this northern terrain receives limited exposure to boththe Mediterranean influence of Montalcino and the cooling breezes thatthe latters high altitude affords, resulting in wines that displayimpressive ripeness and structure.
