A blend of equally proportioned amounts of Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonvico shows the best parts of each of these grapes; Barbera’s trademark sassy acidity offsets Cabernet’s plushness in a wine of great depth. Berries and cherries, cedar and juniper, grilled herbs and warm spices all meld and unfold in this deeply aromatic wine. It’s a perfect companion to red meat, game and pork dishes.

Emiliana Martini Sonvico and Angelo Sonvico founded their Asti estate, Cascina La Barbatella, almost thirty years ago in order to make wine for their guests and themselves; soon, however, they found that the larger world shared their passion and they started selling their wines to the public. Just over 180 acres and sitting with a southwest prospect at 720 feet above sea level, Cascina La Barbatella boasts the kind of sand and clay mixture soil that makes for really powerful yet finessed red wines—and under the hand of enologist Giuliano Noé, the estate has garnered a well-earned reputation for these wines, particularly its two blends, Mistère and Sonvico.
