A very pretty Rosso di Montalcino from an exceptional vintage and one charming small producer, Castilion’s ’06 proffers handfuls of sun-warmed cherries and berries, a lilting note of wildflowers, and a dusting of warm spices and chocolate. Sprightly acidity, tawny tannins and a rustic balance make this a very enjoyable everyday wine.

With 1,750 hectares of grounds peppered with 21 individual guest villas for "club members," this is far more than a wine estate. Named for the 13th century castle on the grounds, Castiglion del Bosco has been producing wine since the 1800's, although the results were traditionally consumed by the proprietors themselves. Only recently, when an outside company purchased the estate, did production expand and appear on the international market.
Today the exclusive retreat here does not detract from the excellent quality of their wines. Fifty-five hectares are dedicated to vineyards for Brunello production, and Massimo Ferragamo just entered the scene as partner in ownership along with Marilyn & Corky Severson. With Ferragamo, best known in the fashion world, the winery stepped up their efforts in the vineyards and cellar, and enologist Nicolo d'Afflitto now leads the team.
