Juicy, traditional and evocative, this Chianti Classico is all about elegance. Welcoming and genial, this ’12 wine practically grabs your ears to pull you back to the glass; it’s a balanced, harmonious and very compelling vintage that will make Chianti lovers sigh with happiness. Fontodi practices organic agriculture and non-interventionist protocol, relying on the estate's exceptional southern position in a natural amphitheater composed of marl soil, which allows the grapes to ripen perfectly and the estate to create wines of great character and structure.
Fontodi Meriggio 2016 750ml
Fontodi Meriggio 2016 750ml
Price: $34.99

Yellow berries, stone fruits, citrus zest and white flower petals dance on a bed of crushed river rocks and pressed herbs in the zesty, elegant ’16 Meriggio. Nicely weighty yet energetic, this wine fills the mouth with an electric feel, whooshing across the palate with mineral vigor, and building to an herbaceous, clean and lingering finish. Deriving from Fontodi’s organically tended, north-facing La Rota vineyard, this wine’s Sauvignon Blanc grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine ages on the lees for six months, also in stainless steel. Just over 650 cases made each vintage.
Fontodi Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico 2014 750ml
Fontodi Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico 2014 750ml
Price: $39.50

Fontodi’s owner-winemaker, Giovanni Manetti, has long considered Chianti Classico’s Lamole region special, and this wine proves him right. 2014 is the inaugural vintage of Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico, and the wine bursts with succulent cherries and berries, piquant minerals and herbs, and kisses of loam and pressed wildflowers. Bright acidity propels this intense wine, yet its fine-grained tannins cling to the cheeks to blanket the palate with a textured, silky feel. This is a very elegant Chianti Classico that showcases Sangiovese’s finesse, rather than its raw power. Deriving from Lamole’s 17-acre, sandy-soiled Filetta vineyard, the grapes for this wine ferment in concrete, and the wine ages in oak casks for 15 months before being bottled.

Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2012 750ml
Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2012 750ml
Price: $45.99

Opulent, complex and electric, this ’12 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a seductive wine that layers its succulent red and blue fruits with espresso, blood orange, licorice, wildflowers, savory herbs and leather. Bright acidity makes this wine almost crackly on the palate, but its super-ripe fruit and umami bass-line provide a riveting balance--it’s an intense, fleshy wine that’s still nimble and graceful. Produced from the best grapes grown on the property, this wine ferments for eight days in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by twelve more days of skin contact; after, the wine performs its malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, then ages in barrels for fourteen months before being bottled, where it ages for sixteen months. A bold, delicious wine that explodes with pure Sangiovese fruit, this ’12 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a delight to drink right now, but it’ll be even more delicious years down the road.
Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo 2014 750ml
Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo 2014 750ml
Price: $89.99

Sophisticated, polished and graceful, the ’14 Vigna del Sorbo crackles with energy. Vibrant red berries dance on a backdrop of crushed river rocks, violet petals, baking spices, sun-warmed earth and pressed herbs in this wonderfully balanced wine. While some Vigna del Sorbo vintages are big reds, the 2014 is taut, muscular and very much alive; it whooshes across the palate, leaves chewy tannins and saline minerals in its wake, and crescendos in a fine, lingering finish. This mono-varietal Sangiovese derives from forty-year-old vines grown on the estate’s southwest-facing Vigna del Sorbo plot; the grapes ferment for three weeks with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wine ages for about 28 months in botti grande (about four months longer than is customary) before bottling.
Fontodi Flaccianello 2013 750ml
Fontodi Flaccianello 2013 750ml
Price: $119.00

Balancing its succulent fruit with brooding, savory notes, the ’13 Flaccianello is a study in delicious contrasts. Ripe red and blue fruits dance on a bed of graphite, smoke, worn leather, cedar and cigar wrapper in this beautifully delineated wine. Powerful yet incredibly finessed, this Flaccianello unfurls on the palate to reveal layers of flavor notes and a silky texture; fine-grained tannins and considerable structure suggest this is a wine for the long haul. Crafted from a selection of organically grown Sangiovese deriving from the estate’s best vineyards, this wine ferments with only natural yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about three weeks before aging in oak barrels for 24 months. This ’13 Flaccianello is a classic bottling with tremendous structure; ideally, it would rest in your cellar for a few years before optimum enjoyment.
