Poderi Aldo Conterno

Aldo Conterno is known as the "King of Barolo" in Italy. Poderi Aldo Conterno is situated in Monforte d'Alba on the prized Bussia Soprano vineyard, in the heart of the Barolo region. The Conterno family has been producing and aging the great Piemontese wines for more than five generations. Aldo left his legendary brother at his father's cellar (the Giacomo Conterno estate) in 1969 to pursue his own winemaking interests and reputation, creating the wines of Poderi Aldo Conterno in the "Favot" cellar. The estate exclusively vinifies its own 25 hectacres of grapes. The Conterno brothers parted ways back in the late sixties to create their own styles of Barolo, Giovanni producing the more traditional style of the two. However, Aldo's wines are not considered modern; he still refuses to age them in small barriques. The wines are more fruit driven than the earthy wines of the Giacomo Conterno estate across town in Monforte. Aldo Conterno's corporate policy of producing only the highest quality wines while mixing tradition with innovation falls directly in line with the aspirations of IWM. We offer only the highest quality wines to our clients.

Conterno Aldo Chardonnay Bussiador 2006 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo 2006
Although Aldo Conterno is best known for his Barolos, he also produces other interesting, modern wines like this Bussiador Chardonnay. It's a full-bodied 100 percent barrel fermented wine with rich notes of honey, tropical fruit and toasted oak. It's a very modern, expressive wine that's delightful to drink right now but will age well for several years as well. The wine remains inside stainless steel vats for four to five months and is transferred into Slavonian oak barrels where it is left to age for 26 to 28 months before bottling. The grapes used to make Conterno's Barolo come from vineyards which are at least 20 years old.

Our Price: $131.69
One of the three Conterno cru vineyards, (Romirasco and Colonnello are the two others), the Cicala remains inside stainless steel vats for three to five months before being put into Slavonian oak barrels, where it is left ageing for 28 to 30 months. The Cicala vineyard, which translates into "balm-cricket," is approximately 40 to 45 years old. Sand is the dominant element of Colonnello's soil, providing this Barolo with its standard, Conterno elegance and finesse. During vinfication, the wine remains inside stainless steel vats for three to five months and is transferred into Slavonian oak barrels where it ages for 28 to 30 months before bottling.
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Romirasco 2006, 750ml Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Romirasco 2006, 1500ml

This esteemed cru became the primary constituent of Granbussia (70 percent) beginning with the 1982 vintage. The change was a significant one, as Romirasco is essentially a theoretical blend of Cicala and Colonnello, combining the distinctive soil types that constitute the hallmark of each site. In 2004, the estate vinified a cru expression of Romirasco, as hail precluded the production of Granbussia. This debut effort so impressed the estate that it has decided to reduce the production of Granbussia in order to make Romirasco a regular portfolio member.
