While Barbera is Piemonteâ™s most extensively planted grapeâ”constituting over 50 percent of DOC productionâ”it achieves its greatest expression in the Barbera dâ™Alba, Barbera dâ™Asti, and Monferrato DOCs. Those derived from Barbera dâ™Asti are regarded as realizing the most transparent expressions, given their profound articulation of Barberaâ™s hallmark acidity. DeForvilleâ™s traditional orientation privileges a lithe, rustic character.
Soon after departing their native land of Belgium, the De Forvilles founded an eponymous estate in Barbaresco. Paolo Anfosso assumed direction of the estate upon marrying into the family in 1907, and the estate remains under the direction of the Anfosso's today. The estate possesses holdings in two of Barbarescoâ™s most highly regarded crus, Rabajà and Loreto, the latter of which serves as the source of two single-vineyard selections, both a Barbaresco and a Dolcetto. Vinification is predominantly traditional in nature, as large oak barrels are employed in the aging process and the maceration period for the Barbaresco may extend over a period of four weeks.
