Alvaro’s most recent project, the estate Descendientes de José Palacios, lies in Bierzo and is run with his nephew Ricardo Perez. Here, the pioneering twosome were attracted to the land for its similarities to Priorat and Piemonte’s Langhe Hills in its unique soil combinations, old vines, and the nuanced expressions of the indigenous varietals. Guests can experience the uniqueness of the Mencía grape through their limited production, single-vineyard Bierzo wine La Faraona (just 65 cases) – the 2006 La Faraona is not available elsewhere.

When it comes to the all star cult wines of Spain, Alvaro Palacios may have hit the pinnacle in Bierzo with his La Faraona. With just 65 cases produced in total, this wine simply cannot be found. In fact, the few bottles we have available are coming from Alvaro himself ensuring pristine conditions. At IWM, we often talk about Italy’s inspirational and pioneering winemakers; Angelo Gaja and his relentless effort to raise the standards and recognition of Barbaresco (and Piemonte as a whole); Mario Incisa della Rocchetta’s determination to grow Cabernet Sauvignon to high standards in the neglected region of Toscana’s Maremma and successfully launching the historic Super-Tuscan movement; Antonio Mastroberardino and his efforts in resurrecting the ancient varietals of Campania as well as raising the bar for quality in the South. In Spain, we find an equal in the inspirational work of Alvaro Palacios. There is no denying that Spain is now one of the most exciting winemaking countries in the world and Alvaro has raised the profile of quality Spanish winemaking through respect for the land or “terruno” as it is referred to in Spanish, its indigenous varietals, and a noninterventionist approach to winemaking.
