Although a very limited amount of wineissues from this region, Valle dAosta offers a surprisingly diverseand rather esoteric grape population, representing Italian, French, andSwiss varieties. While this international array is confusing in and ofitself, it becomes even more so given the labeling protocol, whichadmits both varietal and geographic identification, as well as theusage of Italian and French. Also, Valle dAosta maintains its ownunusual nomenclature for certain grapes: Nebbiolo goes by the namePicotendro and Pinot Grigio is referred to as Malvoisie (specificallyin Chambave). Of the 13 recognized indigenous varietals, Petit Rouge(the basis of both Torrette DOC wines) and Fumin are the mostwidespread. The Frères Grosjean portfolio represents the indigenousPetit Arvine, Premetta, and Fumin in varietal-labeled bottles andTorrette DOC. Pinot Noir, Gamay, and Malvoisie represent GrosjeansFrench varietal contingent. The Grosjean Family has been making winesin the high alpine mountains since 1975, hand harvesting many of thegrapes. The wines are then vinified mostly in stainless steel tangswith a small percentage in used oak barrels.
