The Wines of Lombardia

Wines of LombardiaLombardia is pretty well off, and it shows in the opulent, highly stylized wineries of its Franciacorta zone, the seat of the region’s sparkling production. These are not merely for the sake of appearance, however, as sparklers—and increasingly still wines— are taken quite seriously in a land where business is pleasure. Situated in the Po Valley’s center, Lombardia is bordered by Trentino–Alto Adige, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Piemonte, and Switzerland.

Bruno Verdi Bonarda Possessione di Vergombera 2007 Frecciarossa Riesling Frizzante NAI 2008
Bonarda is planted in Argentina (where it's that country's second most widely planted grape) and it may or may not be related to the Lombardian grape--but both produce wines marked by ripe, exuberant fruit and moderate acidity that are easy to drink and to pair with food. Only the best crus are used for the estate's whites, including the Frecciarossa Riesling Frizzante Nai. A rich and intense white with hints of apricots, tropical fruits and minerals carries through to the long finish.

Frecciarossa Riesling Gli Orti 2008
The Gli Orti Riesling from Frecciarossa, produced in the Oltrepò Pavese zone, is a rich and intense white. Hints of apricots and tropical fruits carry through to the long finish of mineral notes. Only the best grapes are used for Frecciarossa’s whites, including this Pinot Nero, grown within 3.5 acres of calcareous vineyards. After a soft pressing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Made of 100 percent Pinot Nero, or Pinot Noir, this straw-yellow wine exhibits intense fruits, is subtly sweet and delicate and long lasting on the palate.

Tenuta Castellino Terre di Franciacorta Capineto 2000 Bruno Giacosa Spumante Brut 2004
Cabernet Sauvignon thrives in this area of Lombardia due to the clay and limestone soils. So naturally it's not a surprise that the Castellino estate has fashioned a superb expression, replete of Franciacorta's unmistakable terroir. The wine possesses intense black fruit flavors, extraordinary concentration and significant depth. Although Giacosa is one of Piemonte's foremost producers (of Barolo and Barbaresco), he elects to produce this 100% Pinot Nero spumante in Piemonte's neighboring region of Lombardia—formerly a part of Piemonte—specifically in the Oltrepo Pavese zone.
Bruno Giacosa Spumante Brut 2003, 750ml
Our Price: $171.12
Bruno Giacosa Spumante Brut 2003
Subtly delineated by scents of fruit and yeast, Giacosa's Brut is elegant and marked by a persistent perlage; it is dry and lively on the palate.
