Fresh-faced and laser-precise, the ’03 Abbona Barolo Terlo Ravera revels in the ripeness of its vintage. Fistfuls of posies and fruit waft from the glass, while the palate reveals brambly red fruit warmed by spices laid atop a bed of warm saddle leather and fresh-cut herbs. Velvety tannins gently wrap the palate of this wine that will accompany grilled pork and lamb with aplomb. Drinking now.

Marziano Abbona owns a total of 40 hectares in Dogliani, Barolo, and Barbaresco. Each vineyard is planted to the grape that derives the greatest benefit from its particular aspects. Abbona even affords his less important varieties the best vineyard positioning possible, exhibiting a degree of care that is very rarely undertaken.
In the cellar, Abbona employs closed stainless-steel tanks and temperature-control, frequently pumping the juice over the must in a brief but energetic system of maceration, which extracts more color from the skins while eliciting fewer tannins. He induces an early malolactic fermentation to craft a wine of greater suppleness, smoother texture, and more expressive fruit components.
