This varietal wine is pure Alto Adige. It’s 100-percent Rotberger, a cross between Schiava and Riesling Renano, and it’s a light, refreshing red wine that drinks like a white. Given that it hails from a polyglot land where everyone speaks multiple languages and dialects, the unusualness of this grape and this wine makes sense. More importantly, the wine is light, refreshing, scented with wildflowers and sunlit crushed berries, showing notes of black currants and ripe elderberry, and finishing with spice and piquant bitter almond. Perfect for apperitivi or lunch, this 2010 Rosato is drinking now.

A winery begun in friendship and legacy, Pojer & Sandri started in 1975 when Fiorentino Sandri joined with his friend Mario Pojer to cultivate a vineyard he’d inherited. Now nearly forty years later, the winery, located in Trentino-Alto Adige northern region called Faedo, is producing two flagship wines, Palai Müller-Thurgau and Trentino “Nosiola,” along with several others. Known for their spirited renditions of regional wines, the winery also makes several fine grappas, acquaviti and brandy.
