Overall, vines in Piemonte were plentiful in 2008, so careful vineyard management was necessary to avoid any rot or other disease from the humidity. Heavy rains eventually transitioned into months of dry weather during harvest, leaving the grapes in perfect form. Made of 100 percent Dolcetto grown on vines planted more than 50 years ago, Clerico’s Langhe Visadi cru is macerated for four to five days; the wine then ages in barrique for six to eight months before revealing a dark, purple-red color with layered perfumes of black fruits and toast.
|
Known as Rebula in Slovenia and Robola in Greece, Ribolla wines are generally dry and buttery, possessing good acidity in their youth. However, age moderates this grape’s juvenile vivacity and many age well, developing a mature richness.

While many oenophiles may feel it obligatory to dismiss all Italian Pinot Grigio, Friuli’s top producers consistently demonstrate this varietal’s eminent worth and range. Most regard it as a fairly light, quaffable wine, but Movia’s version expresses the wine’s broader dimensions in a full-bodied version that delivers generous tropical fruits, acacia honey, underlying minerality, and a creaminess reminiscent of crème brûlée. While Movia’s Pinot Grigio is grown exclusively in Friuli, the vinification facilities are situated across the border in Slovenia.
|
Sauvignon Blanc is reinvented at Movia. Grassy gooseberry aromas are the trademark of New Zealand’s take on this international varietal. It exhibits a softer, more subtle dimension in the wines of Bordeaux, where it figures in blends with Sémillon. Movia, however, does not reference either of these popular expressions in its interpretation. This unique Sauvignon is derived from a clone of the grape found exclusively in one plot of the Movia estate. A subtle version—i.e., less “green” than typical Sauvignon—this wine is laden with floral and tangerine notes. While possessing a high level of acidity, this element is integrated into the wine through aging in new oak on its lees for 20 months, which fashions a voluptuous character and supple finish.

First released in 1979, Clerico’s single cru Barbera is matured in 70-percent new barrique for 12 to 16 months. Intense raspberry and currant on the nose lead into a rich, persistent palate. This Barbera complements cured meats and pasta dishes well

Resting near Panzano in the epicenter of Toscana's viticulture, Fontodi's vines enjoy a southern aspect, a position in a natural amphitheatre, and marl soil. These optimum conditions allow the grapes to ripen perfectly, therefore creating wines of great character and structure. The natural potential of the grapes combined with the leadership of Marco and Giovanni Manetti (cousins who are sons of the 1968 visionaries) makes for perfection in winemaking. The estate dates back to the 16th century, but her modern era started in 1968 when the Manettis, a Florentine family famous for more than three centuries for their terracotta production, purchased the estate.

A true work of “Arte,” this wine is the only one in Clerico’s collection that is aged exclusively in 100 percent new barrique. Crafted with 90 percent Nebbiolo from the Ginestra, Pajanà, Bussia, Mosconi and Manzoni vineyards and 10 percent Barbera, the blend is aged for 16 to 18 months. Despite a mix of torrential downpours and torrid temperatures in the beginning of the season, the 2006 season balanced out in the end, leaving a full-bodied, complex wine with hints of plums and licorice, velvety tannins and a long, inviting finish.

Experience what happens to Friuli's long-lived white grape in the hands of the world's leading bio dynamic producer. Ribolla Gialla has long been revered by the iconoclasts of Friuli. In Lunar, a pure Ribolla, the dynamic and accomplished Ales Kristancic of Movia desired to be totally hands off, allowing the wine, in a manner of speaking, to make itself. This by no means implies that the wine is simple to produce, as such a natural approach requires a command of both traditional and biodynamic principles: Ales ages the wine on the lees inside small Slavonian oak barrels for over two years without racking, a viticultural decision that produces the wine's unusual coloring. With its ciderlike hue, this striking beauty calls immediate and dramatic attention to its esoteric nature. Compelling and utterly unique, this is the essence of Ribolla raw and resplendent pure wonder under the Friulian moon.
|
Although Giacosa is one of Piemonte's foremost producers (of Barolo and Barbaresco), he elects to produce this 100% Pinot Nero spumante in Piemonte's neighboring region of Lombardia—formerly a part of Piemonte—specifically in the Oltrepo Pavese zone.

Pale salmon color with delicate scents of raspberries and mushrooms. Rustic elegance and weighty complexity. Sourced from 130-year old Pinot Nero vines and bottled undisgorged after 2 years aging on the lees, this limited production sparkler is crisp, savory and unique. To open Movia's Puro, please view proper disgorging procedures.
|
Like Movia's whites, maturation is performed exclusively in small Slavonian oak casks. Racking is never performed, and the fining and filtering procedures are governed by the atmospheric pressure incurred by the arrival of the new moon. This constitutes a wholly natural approach that presents the wines in a state of brilliant clarity. This Pinot Noir’s luscious depth is surprising given Brda’s cool climate; the flavor suggests black cherries and wild herbs.

Pale salmon color with delicate scents of raspberries and mushrooms. Rustic elegance and weighty complexity. As the Puro Rose is bottled undisgorged, the yeast sediment plug must necessarily be removed under water prior to its being served. Movia Puro Rose is made from 100% Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir). Offering hints of red fruit and mushrooms on the nose, this elegant sparkler exhibits a rustic expression, delivering significant complexity and weight on the palate. To open Movia's Puro, please view proper disgorging procedures.

Although Aldo Conterno is best known for his Barolos, he also produces other interesting, modern wines like this Bussiador Chardonnay. It's a full-bodied 100 percent barrel fermented wine with rich notes of honey, tropical fruit and toasted oak. It's a very modern, expressive wine that's delightful to drink right now but will age well for several years as well.

It is the most controversial and misunderstood wine that we have carried in the past three years. More importantly, though, Gravner's Breg Anfora has also been the most inspirational, earning Gravner a dedicated chapter in Sergio's new memoir, Passion on the Vine

Ribolla Gialla is one of Friuli's oldest indigenous vines, and enjoyed the distinction of serving as the drink of choice—under the name Rabiola del Collio—in the Republic of Venice. While virtually unknown to a modern audience, Josko Gravner authored a movement dedicated to its reclamation, endeavoring to comprehend this difficult varietal's character and nuances over a period spanning two decades. His work with Ribolla represents the achievement of which he is most proud.

The wine remains inside stainless steel vats for four to five months and is transferred into Slavonian oak barrels where it is left to age for 26 to 28 months before bottling. The grapes used to make Conterno's Barolo come from vineyards which are at least 20 years old.
