Montepulciano's low acidity and ability to take on color with a very short maceration period render it conducive to blending with varietals like Aglianico in Puglia, or Cabernet Sauvignon in Le Marche's Super-Marchigiano blends. While Montepulciano blends are often crowd pleasers, a contingent of pure varietal wines is crafted in the DOCs of Abruzzo's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Le Marche's Rosso Cònero. While the latter may include a proportion of Sangiovese, interestingly, Sangiovese is somewhat losing its place in Le Marche. Though still required for Rosso Piceno production, its contribution has been substantively reduced in recent years. Producers in Abruzzo are seeking to maximize Montepulciano's rich core of black and purple fruits through aging in barrique and rigorous processes of selection, producing concentrated offerings.Nose of raspberries and strawberries. A balanced and smooth body, with fruit flavors.
