Complex, unusual, silky with tannins and possessing an earthy, palate of red and black fruits, spices, and fresh acidity, Bea's Montefalco Rosso is a wine that unabashedly sings of Umbria in all of its earthy, powerful glory. This ripe '09 offers loads of juicy red and black fruits, a thrum of Umbrian meadow and earth, and fine, silky tannins--it's an extraordinary value with great longevity. Paolo Bea San Valentino is Bea's wine that's easiest to understand, and in a riper vintage like 2009, it's even more delicious.

Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito 2009 375ml
Price: $94.99

Complex, interesting, compelling and surprising, Paolo Bea ’09 Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito is not a wine that you can relegate to one category. At once sweet and savory, this Passito-style wine holds the palate in delicious tension; it’s a pure, energetic, complicated expression of Sagrantino, and it could only come from Umbria’s master. Bea let the grapes dry for a few weeks, concentrating their sugars and flavors, and then let them ferment with skin contact for 39 days before aging for almost three years on the lees in stainless steel, and bottling the wine almost five years after harvest. Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Pagliaro 2010 750ml
Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Pagliaro 2010 750ml
Price: $97.99

Pure, transparent red and blue fruits dance on a bed of tarry earth, pencil lead, peppery herbs, crushed violets, and baking spices in this classically styled ’10 Sagrantino Secco Pagliaro. Burly tannins hold the tongue in a steely grip, but a sweet inner perfume and kinetic acidity show that this wine has the structure for serious aging. Bea’s flagship Sagrantino bottling always needs a few years in the cellar, and that’s especially true for this 2010--time will tame this wine to make a beauty from a tannic beast! The jewel in the crown of Umbria, this mono-varietal Sagrantino macerates for an incredible 48 days; the wine ages in stainless steel for one year, two years in barrels, followed by a year in bottle. Paolo Bea is a standard bearer of Sagrantino, and the estate’s flagship wine consistently delivers terrific complexity and great longevity.
Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Secco Pagliaro 2008 750ml
Paolo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Secco Pagliaro 2008 750ml
Price: $104.99

Sagrantino is the world’s most tannic grape, but it meets its ultimate match in Paolo Bea, Italy’s foremost natural winemaker. Classic brambly blue and black fruits lay on a dark foundation of smoke, warm saddle leather, cigar wrapper, incense and spice in this spellbinding wine. Bea’s ’08 Montefalco Pagliaro demonstrates the challenges of this chilly vintage in its linear, almost architectural structure and its muscular, age-worthy tannins. Hand crafted from organically grown Sagrantino, the grapes macerate for about 40 days and age for ten months in stainless steel, followed by about two years in used oak. While this wine will need some time in the cellar before true approachability, it’s going to be nearly ageless as time melds its kaleidoscopic flavor palate with its nervy acidity and chewy tannins. Fewer than 1,500 cases produced.
