The Wines of Sicilia

Wines of SiciliaFor the greater part of its history in wine, Sicilia distinguished itself primarily in the dessert wine category—with Marsala headlining its production. Contemporary efforts, however, have established that Sicilia is not merely closer material, but rather, an all-star performer endowed with the resources to lead-off, carry, and bring home an evening's repast.

Mirabile Syrah 2005 Valle Dell'Acate Il Frappato 2008
This is that full-throttle Syrah, a dark, potent beauty that lets you know what it’s all about on the provocative nose, signifying its dramatic palate of effusive black fruits, tar, anise, and undertones of spice and minerality. While it’s definitely not a California wine, you could say that it’s got a little something Rhônish going on there. At the end of the pour, though, Mirabile is Aussie at the core—a heady islander that’s gone down under to say something about Sicilia’s future. The Valle dell-Acate estate's dominant soil type, Milaro, is marked by a base of calcareous sandstone interwoven with clay that supports the area's indigenous grapes, including this Frappato. Light to medium-bodied with a memorable length, the wine has profound scents and flavors of berries, especially of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries.

Di Giovanna Nerello Mascalese 2007 Murgo Brut Rose 2007
Following the footsteps of great grandfather Cristoforo Ciaccio who planted the first vineyards in 1860 and aged his wines in oak barrels in the cellar of the old stone farmhouse in Fiuminello, the Family DI GIOVANNA has cultivated its fields with unwavering pride and dedication for generations. The indigenous Nerello Mascalese possesses aromas of black cherry and currants, followed by black pepper, dark fruit and chocolate on the palate, which is all supported structurally by supple tannins. The Murgo estate is situated in a privileged position southeast of Mount Etna and has been making wines traditional to this territory since 1850. A Sicilian gem, this wine, made of 100 percent Nerello Mascalese, and indigenous grape of the region, exhibits hints of cherry and red fruit, with an intense aroma f fruits and flowers. This wine has a long mineral finish with persistent bubbles and nice acidity.

Cos Cerasuolo Vittoria Classico 2007 COS Nero d'Avola Scyri 2001
COS was established in 1980 by three friends--Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti, and Pinuccia Strano--each of whom is represented by the initial letter of his surname in the winery's title. Ruby red in color with garnet highlights, COS' Nero d'Avola emits intense and clean aromas of plum, black cherry, vanilla, tobacco, licorice and even a hint of eucalyptus. Exceptionally well balanced in tannins, alcohol and acidity, this wine has staying power and a strong finish. Drink 2006-2011
COS Pithos 2008, 750ml
Our Price: $49.80
COS Pithos 2008
COS’ Pithos is traditional Cerasuolo blend of two Sicilian native varietals: Nero d'Avola and Frappato. The Nero brings a gutsy tannic structure and a tarry profile, while the Frappato delivers acidity and bright red, almost strawberry-like, fruit. Vinifying the wine in Pithos, a storage pot or amphora, COS fashions a sauvage, indelibly funky interpretation of the blend. This wine shows notes of violets and fruit blossoms, bold berry fruit, accented by minerality and spunky tannins.
