It may take an outsider like Vinosia to generate attention for Puglia's whites. In fact, Vinosia may just show Puglia what it's missing through this bottling, a unique blend of three clones of the aromatic Malvasia grape (Malvasia di Novoli, Malvasia di Candia Aromatic, Malvasia Candida). With a perfumed bouquet of mango and passion fruit, this is a compelling example of Vinosia's talent and Malvasia's potential.

Green apples, citrus and honeysuckle on the nose. Medium to full bodied, with refreshing and vibrant acidity.

The De Conciliis family are big fans of jazz-reversing the letters of Selim, the first sparkler made in Campania, gives you "Miles," a name instantly recognizable to any music buff. Crafted from Fiano and Aglianico, two grapes indigenous to Campania, this spumante is made in the charmat method. The yellow-green Selim itself has a refreshing nose of tropical and citrus fruits, peach and apple. Intense, unusual and beautifully balanced, Selim is a fitting tribute to its namesake. Drink now.

The Gli Orti Riesling from Frecciarossa, produced in the Oltrepò Pavese zone, is a rich and intense white. Hints of apricots and tropical fruits carry through to the long finish of mineral notes.

A pure, yet richly flavored white with notes of hay, wild herbs and nectarine, this wine is made of an 85-15-blend of the indigenous Friulano and Malvasia Istriana. Grown in Friuli's Collio area, the wine is slightly more complex than the Delfino and the cooler climate leaves the wines with minerals, structure and the ability to age several years longer.

You can tell by its name that Greco ("Greek") originated in Greece. An import to southern Italy more than 2,500 years ago, the Greco grape is often compared to Viognier because of its subtle fruit and herbaceous aromatics. The sun-filled mountains on the De Conciliis estate produce optimally-ripened fruit. The most recent Greco di Tufo on the market, this full-bodied, dry white has pronounced minerals and acidity with notes of almond, peach and pear on the palate.
|
The estate's basic Barolo, created from grapes grown in all of the Massolino vineyards, has been in production since 1911 and is still consistent in its excellent quality, even in difficult vintages. The single-vineyard Barolo Margheria and Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva were both produced for the first time in the 1980's. The Margheria cru imparts woodland notes that are accentuated by traditional vinification methods, while the unique terroir of the Vigna Rionda enables the production of wines with a potential rarely found elsewhere.

Pale yellow in color. An aromatic nose of white flowers that is echoed on the medium- to full-bodied palate and accented by subtle spice and honey notes.
|
While cultivated in both Sardegna and Toscana, Vermentino has a special rapport with Liguria, delivering a distinct herbal dimension on both the nose and palate. Bisson's efforts with this varietal are considered to be among the region's most accomplished. This is a crisp wine with pronounced herbal distinction, mild brininess and a savory dimension.

Only 100 percent Friulano could make this white so elegant with flavors of white peach and apricots with refreshing minerality. Grown on the historic vineyards once owned by ontessa Weiz Del Mestri, the Tenuta della Contessa provides 50- to 80-year-old vine for the formerly-known "Tocai" variety. The wine is ready to drink now and was produced in only a small quantity (625 cases).

Known as Rebula in Slovenia and Robola in Greece, Ribolla wines are generally dry and buttery, possessing good acidity in their youth. However, age moderates this grape’s juvenile vivacity and many age well, developing a mature richness.

While many oenophiles may feel it obligatory to dismiss all Italian Pinot Grigio, Friuli’s top producers consistently demonstrate this varietal’s eminent worth and range. Most regard it as a fairly light, quaffable wine, but Movia’s version expresses the wine’s broader dimensions in a full-bodied version that delivers generous tropical fruits, acacia honey, underlying minerality, and a creaminess reminiscent of crème brûlée. While Movia’s Pinot Grigio is grown exclusively in Friuli, the vinification facilities are situated across the border in Slovenia.
|
Sauvignon Blanc is reinvented at Movia. Grassy gooseberry aromas are the trademark of New Zealand’s take on this international varietal. It exhibits a softer, more subtle dimension in the wines of Bordeaux, where it figures in blends with Sémillon. Movia, however, does not reference either of these popular expressions in its interpretation. This unique Sauvignon is derived from a clone of the grape found exclusively in one plot of the Movia estate. A subtle version—i.e., less “green” than typical Sauvignon—this wine is laden with floral and tangerine notes. While possessing a high level of acidity, this element is integrated into the wine through aging in new oak on its lees for 20 months, which fashions a voluptuous character and supple finish.

The Enrico Fossi estate, located just outside Firenze, is one of the most dynamic producers of powerful, almost over-the-top reds, from both native and international varieties. But Fossi also makes this beautiful, rich, barrel-aged white from Pinot Bianco that's an equally impressive--and elegant--offering.
|
Experience what happens to Friuli's long-lived white grape in the hands of the world's leading bio dynamic producer. Ribolla Gialla has long been revered by the iconoclasts of Friuli. In Lunar, a pure Ribolla, the dynamic and accomplished Ales Kristancic of Movia desired to be totally hands off, allowing the wine, in a manner of speaking, to make itself. This by no means implies that the wine is simple to produce, as such a natural approach requires a command of both traditional and biodynamic principles: Ales ages the wine on the lees inside small Slavonian oak barrels for over two years without racking, a viticultural decision that produces the wine's unusual coloring. With its ciderlike hue, this striking beauty calls immediate and dramatic attention to its esoteric nature. Compelling and utterly unique, this is the essence of Ribolla raw and resplendent pure wonder under the Friulian moon.

A rare find, this bottling offers a more serious take on Moscato, delivering a sublime lush and honeyed expression. Wines derived from the passito method—in which the grapes are allowed to dry on mats or in a hanging position—may be made in a sweet style (Vin Santo and Recioto della Valpolicella) or vinified dry (Amarone), retaining a suggestion of sweetness from the concentrated fruit.
|
Like Movia's whites, maturation is performed exclusively in small Slavonian oak casks. Racking is never performed, and the fining and filtering procedures are governed by the atmospheric pressure incurred by the arrival of the new moon. This constitutes a wholly natural approach that presents the wines in a state of brilliant clarity. This Pinot Noir’s luscious depth is surprising given Brda’s cool climate; the flavor suggests black cherries and wild herbs.

Although Aldo Conterno is best known for his Barolos, he also produces other interesting, modern wines like this Bussiador Chardonnay. It's a full-bodied 100 percent barrel fermented wine with rich notes of honey, tropical fruit and toasted oak. It's a very modern, expressive wine that's delightful to drink right now but will age well for several years as well.
