Debut: Discover the Under-the-Radar, No-Frills Traditional Brunello that Would Make Biondi-Santi Proud. It is a Rare New Find from the Classic Vintage and a Montalcino Patriarch That Dates Back to the 16th Century.

"Padelletti is one of the oldest winemaking families in Montalcino, and they proudly propose a very traditional interpretation of the Sangiovese grape."

Our enthusiasm for the classic 2016 vintage continues and will continue throughout 2021 as these new and important releases are rolled out. For the IWM Team, the wines capture the essence of a more classic vintage and are marked by freshness, energy, charm, and texture (fine tannins with high acidity). This is only heightened as for many of the vintages surrounding 2016 are stereotypically warmer and drier, producing wines of greater opulence, density of fruit, and alcohol. In its simplest form, the warm 2015, typically produced more plush, darker fruited wines than that of 2016. Both are essential as they showcase compelling expressions of Sangiovese. Monica Larner summed it up well, “Brunello from 2016 and Brunello Riserva from 2015 are poised for long-term success…These are career-defining wines for many estates and for the appellation as a whole.”

As you know by now, we have highlighted many of the dark, juicy and rich expressions from Caprili, Lisini, La Serena, and Ciacci Piccolomini, but we wanted to share another side of Montalcino and that is from Padelletti. These wines have more in common with red Burgundy, showcasing a more understated side with a red-fruited driven personality due to their high elevations and calcium-clay soils from the Rigaccini vineyard. While under the radar, there is another awesome wine story here. This is one of the oldest estates in Montalcino with a history of vineyards dating back to the 1500s. It’s an important family in many ways as the family is responsible for much of the architecture in Montalcino, and it was Carlos Padelletti that was responsible for bringing electricity to Montalcino in 1899. But more importantly, it is their small vineyard holdings and no-frills, minimalist approach to winemaking. Alongside Stella di Campalto, Pian dell Orino, and Le Ragnaie Brunello, we are adding Padelletti Brunello for the four horsemen of our insider Montlacino picks that are quietly acquiring a cult like status.

The wines are beginning to arrive into New York with some of the best pricing in the country. We had both the Brunello and Rosso this past week and can emphatically say, this is one of those producers that makes you rethink the category with such a unique and finessed expression that manages to cover so much of the flavor spectrum. With just 750 cases produced - this is truly an artisanal Brunello di Montalcino and one of the MUST-BUYS from the important vintage of 2016.

FEATURED WINES: The Debut of Padelletti Brunello di Montalcino

2016 Padelletti Brunello di Montalcino
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “As we mentioned with the 2015 release from this address, every now and then you come across one of those producers that makes you rethink the category. For IWM, the historic Padelletti Brunello di Montalcino is a nice departure from some of the deeper and richer Brunellos we often feature. This is more classic, saline and red fruit driven, courtesy to a more traditional approach in the cellar, and their four-hectare plot located at 400 meters altitude, rich with Alberese limestone rock. In 2016, this is an even more ethereal expression and does require a little more patience. With aeration you can expect nuances of red cherries, cranberries, citrus, wild herbs, dried flowers, star anise, licorice, baked earth, cedar, with a touch of saddle leather and cigar wrapper. And with further air-time or day two the tasting spectrum subtly continues adding bay leaf, truffle, and more. This is exciting old school Brunello that speaks to terroir and captures a more Burgundian side to Montalcino. A mere 750 cases are produced. Once again - Case me please.”

Vinous: “The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino comes to life in the glass, showcasing a classic bouquet of wild strawberries laced with smoky minerals and spice, before evolving further with notes of cedar box and dusty dried earth. It’s a model of purity, hosting soft textures over a feminine framework of brisk acids and salty minerals, with tart red fruits contrasted by sour citrus. Violet-tinged florals form along with a hint of plum and licorice, as fine tannins slowly dry out the expression. Readers in search of traditionally-styled yet wonderfully refined and age-worthy Brunello owe it to themselves to seek out the 2016 Padelletti.”
