Four Beautiful Barbera Wines to Drink This Holiday Season!

December 13, 2019
A Note from Sergio

It's time to salute Barbera wine. Like Barolo and Barbaresco, Barbera is a signature wine of Piemonte, but unlike those two heavy hitters, Barbera is the fun, friendly kid next door. Barbera is the wine that's always up for anything, a smile on its face, a bit of mischief in its heart. Yet like that mischievous kid next door, Barbera grows up, and it can surprise you.

Generally grown alongside the fussy, difficult Nebbiolo grape, Barbera became known as "the people's wine" because it's easy to drink and it's easy on the wallet. Barbera needs less aging than the more imposing Barolo and Barbaresco; producers make Barbera to sell as their Barolo and Barbaresco age, and Piemonte wine-lovers buy Barbera to drink because the wine gives them an everyday spin on beloved producers and terroir. Above all, a truly tasty Barbera says a great deal about a producer: it says that this winemaker cares enough to pour heart and soul into a wine that doesn't get the glory.

Today, I'm delighted to bring you a quartet of beautiful Barbera d'Alba wines to pour this holiday season--or cellar for enjoyment next year (and even a couple years down the road). Ranging in pricing from under $20 to just over $42, these four wines come from esteemed producers like Luciano Sandrone and Prunotto, as well as smaller, artisanal wineries like Hilberg-Pasquero and San Giuliano. All of these wines are in stock and ready to ship, and each one is a delicious surprise.

Enjoy!

SPOTLIGHT ON EXCELLENCE
BEST PRICE IN THE US!
Barbera, known as the "people's wine," is possibly the ultimate food-friendly Italian red. With its electric acidity, high alcohol, low tannins, and lush fruit, Barbera is an ideal food wine that will complement any tomato-based pasta dish, most white meats, many vegetable stews, and even your basic grilled cheese sandwich. And owing to the one-two punch of recent warm vintages and increasingly thoughtful wine production, Barbera wines have grown bigger, fruitier, more complex, and less acidic. Today, we're delighted to present a delicious, delectable, and exciting quartet of Barbara d'Alba wines that are perfect to pour throughout the holiday season, into the spring, through summertime, and beyond!

From Hilberg-Pasquero, the 2016 '29.5 Per Alessandra' Barbera d'Alba is delicious, layering its crisp red and brooding blue fruits with savory notes; Barbera's trademark acidity is complemented by lush dry extract, a sweet inner perfume, and a complex, persistent finish--this wine is terrific! San Giuliano's 2016 Fiore di Marcorino Barbera d'Alba is medium-bodied and brightly acidic; this elegant, aromatic Barbera glides with a silky feel into its lingering, chocolatey, mineral-laden finish.

From the Antinori family comes Prunotto 2017 Pian Romualdo Barbera d'Alba, a wine that reflects its high quality, low yield vintage in its intense, genial profile and silky texture. Full-bodied yet balanced, this wine wraps its brambly fruits around a core of minerals and loads its energetic finish with lots of chewy tannins--it's delicious! Finally, Luciano Sandrone is no stranger to IWM clients, and the estate's 2017 Barbera d'Alba is nearly hedonistic. Zesty acidity, lovely fruits, and considerable freshness combine to make this Barbera succulent and stunning!

Barbera has a way of sneaking up on you, stealthily stealing your heart with its boldness, brightness, and earthy beauty, and today's quartet will keep your guests happy from appetizers through the main course. The most planted grape in Piemonte, Barbera thrives in this region most famously known for its collector Nebbiolo wines, and while there are five DOC Barbera regions in Piemonte, the most important is Barbera d'Alba. Coming from four top-notch producers, this Barbera foursome ranges from less than $20 to just over $40--contact your portfolio manager to secure your Barbera selections for this holiday season!
