Welcome.

Just Arrived. An Overachieving “Baby Brunello” from a Montalcino Patriarch and the Grand Cru Like Vineyards of Montosoli and Canalicchio. Plus the Final Eight Cases of the 2016 Brunello.

“Canalicchio di Sopra is one of Montalcino's historic wineries. Over the years, I have had the privilege of tasting some of the estate's older vintages, which have often been thrilling, including a recent bottle of the 1970 that was breathtaking. Readers who have not tasted these wines owe it to themselves to do so. Canalicchio di Sopra is without question one of the most exciting estates in Montalcino today.” - Antonio Galloni

They're heeere… That’s right, the first of the highly anticipated 2016 Brunello di Montalcino has arrived. Today's featured arrival is one that made us pause, stare down into the glass and then look up at one another in complete awe and say, “what was that?” It is none other than the 2016 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino, and we are sad to say we are down to our final seven cases – as most of our allocation sold during the pre-release!

But it does not end there at this historic rising star of Montalcino. The little wine that has the IWM Team hooting and hollering is the 2019 Rosso di Montalcino! The IWM signature “Baby Brunello” is one of those little overachieving bottles that delivers a lot of wine, and quite frankly challenges many of the Brunellos of the past. It makes sense, the pedigree is here as it contains some prized fruit from great vineyards of Montalcino, and is the product of the five-star 2019 vintage – that is already drawing comparisons to 2015 for its ripeness and seductive appeal. And that is what this wine is all about - explosive fruit and baked earth nuances that sends you to the Tuscan hills in one sniff. As excited as we are about the arrivals of 2016 Brunello, this little 2019 Rosso is the perfect transporting house wine that can send you to Italy with each meal.

If you are new to Canalicchio di Sopra, you should know this is one of Montalcino’s great artisanal estates. In fact, they are one of the original eleven producers that helped to shape and define the region dating all the way back to 1962. They have remained true to the traditions of their founding grandfather with the best selection of Sangiovese Grosso from the prized slopes of Montosoli and Canalicchio – two of Montalcino’s revered plots. For the past two decades, we have watched this under-the-radar producer remain relatively quiet, producing what we like to call the “Thinking Man’s Brunello.”

In our opinion, the best tip we can provide is the 2016 Brunello alongside the 2019 Rosso. This might just be Canalicchio’s finest moment in 50+ years. IWM is proud to say, we are one of the only merchants you will find the the wines of Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello. This is a historic moment, as this represents a rare duo of 5-star (*****) vintages from the Consorzio where Mother Nature blessed the hills outside of Siena with the ideal weather conditions for growing Sangiovese.

ADDITIONAL NOTES AND REVIEWS:

2019 CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA ROSSO DI MONTALCINO
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Delizioso – it is once again the perfect word to sum up this transporting giant. One sniff and it does send you to Tuscany in first class. It’s is one of the more serious Rosso di Montalcino with fruit from the Canalicchio cru, as well as a percentage from the grand cru vineyard of Montosoli. In tasting this wine in a line-up of some of our favorite Rosso di Montalcino, we can say firsthand this is a wine that captures the generosity of the vintage. Whereas the neighboring 2019 Le Potazzine captured a more high-toned and feminine expression, this is simply a more expansive Rosso, with a mouthful of generous fruit, but with supporting tannins and acidity that jump out with a little airtime. It simply has texture with freshness, and you can expect nuances of black cherries, plums, herbs and minerality. Let this wine breathe an hour and you will find more depth to this little Rosso that stains the palate for a persistent and long saline finish. It is another highly recommended house wine from IWM that will send you to Tuscany with each meal.”

Vinous: “The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino requires a bit of time to blossom in the glass; yet patience is rewarded, as an air of smoky minerals and peppery herbs slowly evolves into a perfumed display of wild strawberries, rose hips and flowery undergrowth. This is soft and supple, seeming almost fleshy at first, yet it gains harmony through a savory mix of mineral-tinged red berries and spices. A subtle film of fine tannin lingers, yet the mouth waters for more, as this literally buzzes with residual energy while inner florals slowly fade."

2016 CANALICCHIO DI SOPRA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “This is one of those wines where the color alone is worth the price of admission, you can stare into it and quite literally see Sangiovese Grosso purity at its finest. More importantly, it is the most complete expression we have tasted from the 2016 vintage. Yes, it is showing the upright and classic nature of vintage, but with a little air-time the ripe fruit gains weight and fills the glass. There is a richness to accompany the firmness of the house and vintage for what is a deep, sophisticated Brunello. You can expect nuances of bright cherry, black cherry, plum, citrus peel, cinnamon, cedar, a touch of underbrush and minerality. I was simply awesome to taste these side-by-side with the sibling single vineyard expression. The Normale is more finessed than the La Casaccia, that is more robust and chewy. This is another top recommendation from the must-by vintage.”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate “The Canalicchio di Sopra 2016 Brunello di Montalcino shows balance and symmetry with that difficult twofold delivery of power and elegance. This terrific new release shows dark fruit and tart cherry, but then unwinds slowly to reveal light spice, toasted nut, blue flower and crushed limestone. The wine affords a genuine sense of place with roots in the northern half of the appellation where the light is whiter and the nights are cooler. That brilliant luminosity appears in the pure quality of fruit and the sharp focus of the mouthfeel, driven by balanced tannins and acidity. The sensation it gives is compact and long, without too much extra volume or padding. This wine is like a contoured, chiseled and carefully polished marble statue that you would see in a Renaissance church.
