Drink-Me-Now Cerbaiona Brunello, Rinaldi Barbera, and Méo-Camuzet Clos de Vougeot!
April 12, 2018
A Note from Sergio

Like me, Cerbaiona's Diego Molinari is a fan of tradition. When he founded Cerbiaona, Molinari, or the "Commander," as he was commonly called, chose to age his wines in the "old style" with Slavonian tonneaux, and for decades, these botti turned out Brunello that was long aging, rich, and powerful. A few years ago, the Commander decided to sell his Cerbaiona estate to a group that carries on the traditional methods that Molinari started. Today, I'm proud to present a new allocation of 2008 and 2009 Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino, wines made when Molinari was still in charge, and they are tremendously tasty.

Sitting in the La Croce zone in the eastern-central portion of Montalcino not too far from the legendary Biondi-Santi, Cerbaiona's vineyards rest at a slightly lower altitude, so Cerbaiona's grapes tend to ripen a little more early, and sometimes more completely, and this ripening provides for a denser Brunello. The 2009 Brunello is a sleek, polished, elegant wine that thrums with life, and the more muscular 2008 packs a gorgeous punch. These Brunelli were knockouts upon release, but now with maturity, they're terrific!

Along with these two beautifully aged Brunelli, I'm delighted to offer a recent release from another traditionalist--Giuseppe Rinaldi's bold, blazing 2016 Barbera d'Alba. The 2016 Rinaldi Baroli will be outrageous, but we won't be able to drink them for years. In the meantime, we can enjoy Beppe's layered, cosmically intense Barbera. The grapes for this wine grow alongside the Nebbiolo for Rinaldi's Barolo, and Rinaldi vinifies this Barbera with the same kind of meticulous care and adherence to tradition that the estate uses for its big ticket Barolo. It's hard to drink Rinaldi's Barbera and not smile with the joy of it, and, just as with the estate's Barolo, this wine will drink for years and years.

Finally, I managed to score some more Méo-Camuzet 2009 Clos de Vougeot Près Le Cellier--enjoy!

Giuseppe Rinaldi Barbera d'Alba 2016 750ml
Giuseppe Rinaldi Barbera d'Alba 2016 750ml
Price: $92.99

So electric that it almost hums, Giuseppe Rinaldi’s 2016 Barbera is outstanding. Ripe red and brambly blue fruits burst from the glass, accompanied by pencil lead, warm cigar wrapper, baking spices, saline minerals, fresh loam, licorice and underbrush in this first-class Rinaldi Barbera. At once fresh yet richly textured, brightly acidic yet mouth-filling, and fleshy yet grippy, this polished Barbera balances its elements with its exquisite structure. Barbera doesn’t get much better--or more serious--than this age-worthy Rinaldi bottling. Deriving from Rinaldi’s own organic vineyards and grown alongside the estate’s Nebbiolo, the Barbera grapes ferment with natural yeasts in wooden vats, and the wine ages in old oak botti for about a year before bottling. more info
Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino 2009 750ml
Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino 2009 750ml
Price: $229.00

This sleek, elegant ’09 Brunello embodies its ripe vintage in its expressiveness, welcoming you with an explosive nose and a caressing palate, yet this wine retains a seductive balance that pulls you back to the glass. Dark and brooding, the ’09 tumbles juicy red and black fruits with tar, earth, and exotic spices in a silky wine that finishes with bitter almond, minerals and wildflowers. It’s a sophisticated wine that rewards serious Brunello lovers with myriad layers, sweet fruit, and delicious complexity. The cult producer Cerbaiona is the consummate traditionalist, aging its wines in botti for four years to create a concentrated, mineral-laden wine. Cerbaiona makes fewer than 1,000 cases of its brilliant, fresh, pure and ruby-hued Brunello yearly. more info
