Trio of Heroes: ’09 Château Pontet-Canet, ’12 Le Macchiole Scrio, and Bryant Family ’13 Bettina
April 13, 2017
A Note from Sergio

Spring is finally here! The temperature has been in the low 70s in New York, the sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the air is smelling like fresh earth and new flowers. It's a beautiful time to be in the city, and my family and I are loving it! I want to celebrate this time of rebirth and renewal with a trio of wines that IWM clients have enjoyed over the past few years. Representing France, Italy and America, these three wines are beautiful embodiments of terroir, tradition and taste.

Whenever I turn the Spotlight section over to a producer who's not Italian, I do it because that producer and its wines are so exceptional that the warrant the extra attention. Today, I'm proud to present Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac from 2009. One of the rare biodynamic growers in Bordeaux, Château Pontet-Canet is a Fifth-Growth estate that makes first-rate wines, and this '09 bottling is just about ready to drink.

You'll also find the 2012 Scrio, a mono-varietal Syrah, from Le Macchiole. Yesterday, I chose the estate's 2010 Messorio, its Merlot, for the Spotlight, but I could've easily chosen this Syrah. Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole's owner, treats all her vines like her children, caring for them with intuition and skill, and the '12 Scrio is a knockout. Finally, there's a Bordeaux-style blend from the Bryant Family in Napa Valley, the 2013 vintage of its Bettina. You can't go wrong with this wine--it's a benchmark vintage of a landmark wine from an iconic maker!

Enjoy your spring, but most of all, enjoy it with people you love!

Sappy and juicy, the ’13 Bettina layers its sweet red and brambly blue fruits with smoky minerals, crushed river rocks, potpourri, grilled herbs, licorice and mocha; it’s a seductive wine with the structure to drink for decades. Intense, chewy tannins and serious structure mean that you’ll want to wait a few years to enjoy the ’13 Bettina, but time will mellow this powerful wine’s components and show its true finesse. In 2013, Bettina is a blend of blend of 62.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30.2% Merlot and 7.5% Petit Verdot, and this wine derives from grapes grown on winemaker David Abreu’s exceptional vineyards, Madrona, Thorevilos, and Lucia Howell Mountain. more info
