1978-2010, Biondi-Santi Brunello 27-Vintage Vertical
April 24, 2017
A Note from Sergio

About ten years ago, I had lunch with Franco Biondi Santi. We drank a 1970 and a 1971 Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino, and he opened a 1998, but we didn't drink much of it. We took a sip of it, but not more than a sip. Franco then made a surprising suggestion, one that runs counter to the conventional wisdom that a wine that has been open more than a couple of days should be thrown away. He suggested that I should keep the bottle open--uncorked and exposed to air--for one year, during which I should taste it every few weeks.

So I did just that. I took that bottle, and I kept it in a cupboard in my kitchen. Every six weeks I'd have journalists, friends, or collectors come over; I'd pour them a drop and ask how long they thought the wine had been open. Most would say, "One or two days." They were wrong, of course, and over time Franco had made his point: his wines have the structure to last, changing subtly, transforming, evolving, moving with time, not against it

Franco passed away in 2013 at the age of 91, and the wine world lost one of its great producers, while I lost one of my great friends and mentors. I still hear him saying to me, "Let's open a bottle of the 1955, but not yet. Let's wait ten or fifteen years." Franco made wines as his father, Tancredi, did: almost ageless, almost timeless, almost always nearly ready to drink in another ten or fifteen years. Today, I'm overjoyed to present you with a 27-vintage vertical of Biondi-Santi Brunello. Dating from 1978-2010, these wines are gems. They're Italian history in a bottle, and they're the soul of the man who made them, my friend, Franco. It is my pride and my happiness to be able to put them in the hands of you, my clients.

Enjoy!

Price: $139.00

A year that Franco Biondi-Santi pronounced “exceptional,” 2008 provided for a Brunello wafting with scents of juicy cherries, crushed flower petals, licorice, cigar wrapper, forest floor, and earth; these notes of berries and briar reappear on the palate, where they’re joined by spice, earth and smoke. More accessible than the typical Biondi-Santi Brunello, the ’08 Brunello shows its aristocratic breeding in its marriage of succulent fruit and nervy acidity; this wine unfurls on the palate with silky, fine-grained tannins, revealing its myriad layers with time in the glass. Biondi-Santi crafts its "Annata," or normale bottlings, from fruit grown on vines between 10-25 years old in marl soil. Vinified in temperature-controlled cement tanks and aged in Slovenian oak casks, Biondi-Santi Brunello is extraordinarily age-worthy, balanced and beautiful, akin to Brunello's answer to Burgundy. The classic, aromatic, pure and aristocratic 2008 Brunello is entering its drinking window. more info

A complex, elegant evocation of the famed Il Greppo terroir, this ’09 Brunello highlights the ethereal nature of Brunello; juicy red and succulent black fruits dance on a foundation of earth, crushed stones, pressed violets, and spice, with touches of game and licorice. Round and sappy, this wine holds onto its energy, crossing the palate with kinetic acidity to reveal a captivating sweet inner perfume and fine-grained, polished tannins. Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 2010 750ml
Price: $199.00

A benchmark vintage from a landmark estate: you can’t go wrong with Brunello from Biondi-Santi, and in 2010, this wine is breathtaking. Pure, precise red fruit wafts with crushed rose and violet petals, fresh-cut herbs, river rocks, warm cigar wrapper, licorice and baking spices in this austere, aristocratic Brunello from Biondi-Santi. Taut and linear, this 2010 is textbook Biondi-Santi Brunello, rolling across the palate to release a captivating, a complex inner perfume, chewy fine-grained tannins, and a soaring structure. Make no mistake: this vintage needs some time in the cellar, but in a few years, the components of this ’10 Brunello will mellow to become a stunning, graceful whole. Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 2004 750ml
Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 2004 750ml
Price: $225.00

Intensely aromatic, ethereal, delineated, silky and refined, this ’04 Annata Brunello is very much the type that the late, great Franco Biondi-Santi himself favored. Biondi-Santi’s Brunello Annata, or normale bottling, undergoes fermentation in traditional Slavonian oak for 18 days, followed by aging in large oak casks of 800 to 7,000 liters for a period of two to three years, setting the standard for traditional Brunello. The estate called 2004 an “exceptional” vintage, and now with a decade of maturity, this balanced ’04 Biondi-Santi Brunello is coming into its own, offering a touch of tertiary development to its core of sweet red fruit, dried rose petals, earth and telltale Montalcino terroir. more info

Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 1995 750ml
Price: $239.00

Now with two decades of maturity, this benchmark Brunello is just entering its drinking window. This is a wine that defies time, growing better, mellower, more nuanced and more meditative with each passing year--even as it retains its vibrancy and its fresh Montalcino fruit. Biondi-Santi Brunello di Montalcino is the standard for the wine--which only makes sense since the wine originated at this estate more than 130 years ago. more info
Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 1982 750ml
Biondi-Santi Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino 1982 750ml
Price: $349.00

A lovely, elegant, fresh incarnation of Biondi-Santi’s Brunello, the ’05 benefits from the estate’s choice not to bottle a riserva for this vintage; all the very best fruit went into the normale bottling. Rain-spattered roses, crushed raspberries, ripe black cherries, and earth combine to form the flavor profile, but it’s the taut elegance and shimmering acidity that will make it hard for you to put down the wineglass. Cellar for a year or two and drink for the next two decades. more info
