IWM’s Super Singles Flash Sale--180 Wines at Special Pricing!
April 26, 2018
A Note from Sergio

When I'm at home I drink for health, for simplicity, and for taste, because wine, like family, should be both a pleasure and a comfort. Nestled in the company of my beautiful wife and kids, eating dinner that we have cooked, I invariably drink something wonderfully ordinary: a really delicious, simple wine. When I'm relaxing at home, I go for a bottle that doesn't make me think too much. I want to enjoy the moment--not complicate it.

That said, I also enjoy the times when I choose to drink a serious wine, a wine that I have to commit to, me form a relationship with. I'm talking about serious wines that require me train myself to forgo my likes and dislikes, to reframe my thinking, and to respond to on its own mercurial merits. These are life-changing wines, potentially, and I approach them with the gravitas they deserve.

There are also wines that I pour when I want to commemorate a moment--sometimes I've had these wines before, so when I open that bottle and drink the wine again, it layers the experience with a bricolage of memories, of sensory responses, of feelings. I reserve that kind of involvement for holidays and special occasions.

Today's eLetter has single bottles of wine for all occasions, some serious and some simple, to buy and enjoy when you're at home, with others, or when the feeling strikes. Each one of these wines is an experience in the making--and all it's waiting for is you, the right time, and the people you love.

Enjoy!

Fischer Rose 2011 750ml
Fischer Rose 2011 750ml
Price: $23.45

Austrian rosé has appealing purity, transparency and aromatics that stem from its Alpine terroir, and this ’11 rosé from Zweigelt embodies this ideal. This dry Danube Rosé shows its altitude in its structure, and its stainless-steel vinification in its clear, pure palate. Salmon pink in the glass, this mono-varietal Zweigelt, an indigenous varietal that is Austria’s most popular grape, is fresh and juicy, laden with strawberries and herbs, touched with minerality and a zippy acidity. more info

[PRIMA] Terra (Walter De Batte) Cerico 2007 750ml
[PRIMA] Terra (Walter De Batte) Cerico 2007 750ml
Price: $79.99

Whatever you expect from a Liguria Rosso, we can assure you that Walter de Batte’s Cerico, a blend of Grenache that’s kissed with Syrah, will defy it—deliciously. This is no light-hearted seaside quaffer; this is a serious wine whose sauvage flavor profile of juicy cherries, ripe berries, underbrush and meat will bring to mind a fine Hermitage. Not only does the estate craft only about 130 cases a year of this wine, but also very little of this game-changing Rosso makes it out of Italy. They are wines for true connoisseurs of Italian winemaking expertise. more info
Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo Gran Selezione 2014 750ml 750ml
Fontodi Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo Gran Selezione 2014 750ml 750ml
Price: $89.99

Sophisticated, polished and graceful, the ’14 Vigna del Sorbo crackles with energy. Vibrant red berries dance on a backdrop of crushed river rocks, violet petals, baking spices, sun-warmed earth and pressed herbs in this wonderfully balanced wine. While some Vigna del Sorbo vintages are big reds, the 2014 is taut, muscular and very much alive; it whooshes across the palate, leaves chewy tannins and saline minerals in its wake, and crescendos in a fine, lingering finish. This mono-varietal Sangiovese derives from fifty-year-old vines grown on the estate’s southwest-facing Vigna del Sorbo plot; the grapes ferment for three weeks with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and the wine ages for about 28 months in botti grande (about four months longer than is customary) before bottling. more info
Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Price: $92.99

Profoundly dense and rich, this ’11 Volnay is approachable and filled with sweet, ripe fruit, blending energy with a brooding profile, firm structure with elegance, and fine tannins with sauvage notes. This massive wine will certainly get better with time, but the its black and blue fruits, nuances of anise, violets, and wildflowers make this incredibly tempting to open now. A three-acre parcel of 25-year-old vines in very poor, very stony soil, Ronceret sits just under Champans; it’s the bottling its maker calls “My baby.” With its brambly fruits, exotic spices, rich earth, firm minerality and complex texture, his ’11 Ronceret is a palate-staining Burgundy that’s pure physical pleasure to drink, from its aromatic nose to its pyrotechnic finish. Just 100 cases made. more info
