Debut from the “Vintage Made By God.” The Historic Montalcino Estate Remains “Under the Radar” but is the Best Value in Traditional Brunello. Just 10 Cases Arriving.
“Knockout 2015 Brunello, one of the top half dozen of the year.” - Vinous
Delicioso! That is the one word, and best way to sum up many Brunello di Montalcino from the ripe 2015 vintage. Yes, the vintage has been dubbed the “fairytale vintage” by the media and has entered the pantheon of legendary ripe years like 1997, 2007 and even 2010. For IWM, it is simple: there is an extraordinary quality of concentrated fruit in this vintage, with precise varietal characteristics and a stunning level of balance across the region. As Andrea Mantengoli of La Serena exclaimed to Vinous the other day, 2015 was a "vintage made by God,” meaning that Mother Nature provided a sunny vintage and supplied everything the vineyard needed to make great wine — as many did. 2015's soft and inviting approachability will be the perfect complement to the upcoming 2016 vintage, where most of the wines will need more time.
Certainly, that approachability begins with La Serena and our favorite value — Caprili. This old guard producer is one of the original twenty that helped build the Montalcino region into what it is today. And while the wines are produced traditionally in the cellar, the estate is located in the southwestern sector of the Montalcino appellation near the hamlet of Tavernelle, where Caprili is adjacent to Montalcino royalty Case Basse di Soldera and next to Gaja’s Pieve di Santa Restituta. In fact, Caprili was originally part of the Pieve di Santa Restituta estate. This vineyard positioning and location naturally contributes to more fruit concentration than, say Biondi-Santi and Costanti, which are located at higher altitudes further north.
More importantly, there is some price relief here. Where the prized wines of Soldera and Pieve di Santa Restituta easily dip into the triple digits, Caprili is more approachable and offered at a fraction of the price. This is classic Brunello with a pedigree delivered for under $45. Unfortunately, just 3,000 cases are produced for the world, and IWM was allocated a mere ten cases. The house is simply one of our must-buy cellar selections from the ripe and accessible vintage of 2015.

ADDITIONAL NOTES AND REVIEWS:
“I was quite taken with these Brunellos from Caprili, a small property located in the southwest corner of Montalcino. The Brunellos are made in a fairly traditional style. The estate favors natural yeasts, lengthy fermentations and aging in Slavonian oak casks.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
2015 Caprili Brunello di Montalcino
Christopher Deas, IWM: "Bam, boom, pow: right from the pop of the cork this wine screams with the exuberant fruit from the sunny and ripe 2015 vintage. The aromatics alone are worth the price of admission as cherries, red licorice, and herbs quickly fill the room. Even more enticing is the silky texture on the palate. You can expect to find nuances of macerated black cherries, wild berries, a touch of plum, herbs, and earth. But here is the tip: spend time with an open bottle as this wine shows many personalities through the course of the evening. With aeration, that explosive fruit settles and reveals a savory side to the wine with more structure and a coiled core that hints at what is to come. The only problem is that it is hard not to enjoy this juicy Brunello today! There is a lot of Brunello here for under $45. A must buy for 2015."
Eric Guido, Vinous: "Vibrant red. Minerals and violet complement lively red cherry and raspberry aromas on the incisive nose. Then enticingly fresh and well-balanced, with captivating violet inner-mouth perfume to the steely red and black fruit flavors that linger impressively. The delicately peppery finish features polished if youthful tannins and noteworthy purity of fruit. Knockout 2015 Brunello, one of the top half dozen of the year."
