“The 2016 Barbarescos are some of the most compelling young wines I have tasted in 20 years of visiting the region...
Fans of traditionally made Barbaresco (and Barolo!) should not overlook Poderi Colla, an estate that in my view continues to somewhat mysteriously fly under the radar” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

We have not been this excited about an artisanal find from the historic 2016 vintage in teh making since our release of Cigliuti Barbaresco Vie Erte. It is truly another tale of David vs. Goliath with today’s featured producer and wine. With the overwhelming response to the debut offerings from Barolo, our focus has returned to the classic 2016 vintage in the Langhe Hills. This time we are talking about the “Queen of Wines,” Barbaresco. And while the region is synonymous with the single-vineyard, triple-digit “Goliath” bottlings from Bruno Giacosa and Angelo Gaja, whose wines achieved critical perfection in the standout vintage, they can be cost prohibitive for the mere mortal.
In true IWM fashion, we appreciate the overachieving underdog and are always looking for that quintessential below-the-radar artisan producer of Nebbiolo. Alongside the likes of Cigliuti, few producers epitomize this idea more than the family-run winery of Poderi Colla, which crafts one of the great values in Italian wine.

If you appreciate Barbaresco and Barolo, then the symbolic name of Beppe Colla is not new to you. The late and iconic winemaker of the Langhe Hills passed away last year. For many of us, it was this "founding father" of the region that helped get us acquainted with Nebbiolo through his time as the celebrated winemaker and owner of Prunotto during the ‘50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. Alongside Renato Ratti, few Baroloisti knew the region as well, and each were a vital source in drafting up the regulations for what would define the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco as we now know them today. In fact, it was Beppe Colla who was first to really develop and embrace the concept of single-vineyard bottlings and use the term “cru” on his labels in the sixties.

After Prunotto, Beppe eventually came back and started the new family Poderi Colla winery based on the vineyards he felt produced the finest expressions of the noble Nebbiolo. In fact, the estate produces just one Barolo and one Barbaresco; it is the Barbaresco Roncaglie, which is sourced from the eponymous cru, located just below GAJA’s prized Sori Tildin vineyard. It is here that single vineyard Roncaglie is widely recognized as one of the best positions in the entire appellation and is the one plot that the all-knowing Beppe Colla chose for his signature Barbaresco.

We are now pleased to present this classic “Barbaresco of understatement and classat the BEST pricing in the country for the next 48 hours – just $49.99.

At the end of last year, Antonio Galloni, the former Robert Parker Piemonte wine specialist, shared his opinions on the highly anticipated 2016 vintage. “Last year, I wrote, ‘The 2016s, wines from a potentially historic vintage, may very well put Barbaresco on the map big time. As I traveled from producer to producer, I experienced that sense of excitement and energy I always feel when in the presence of important vintages and wines.’ I feel exactly the same way today...” We agree. Buy up all things 2016 Piemonte! We have not been this excited about Nebbiolo as a whole since the 2004 and 2010 vintages! Unfortunately, like many of the producers in the tiny region of Barbaresco, Poderi Colla produces miniscule quantities of their single-vineyard selection. To put this in perspective, just 3,000 cases of the cru Poderi Colla Roncaglie are produced for the world, with a handful arriving in the US. Like many parts of the world in 2016 – Napa to Bolgheri, Burgundy to Piemonte - Mother Nature provided a rare universal vintage and we recommend snatching up all the Barbaresco and Barolo you can grab!

To complement the offering, and as some added price relief in this difficult time, we are including the more modern-minded 2016 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin. This is a full-throttle Barbaresco that lands on the other side of the flavor spectrum of the Poderi Colla and for those wine-lovers looking for more richness and density of fruit.
Additional Notes and Reviews:

“The young 2016 Barbarescos are some of the most compelling young wines I have tasted in twenty years of visiting the region…The 2016s are extraordinarily harmonious. The extended growing season yielded wines with healthy Nebbiolo fruit, soaring aromatics and perfectly ripe, super-polished tannins… Stylistically, the 2016s remind me of the 2004s, but with more fruit and the added finesse that comes with another dozen years of experience in farming and winemaking. The best 2016s I tasted are positively dazzling. Most of the 2016s have only recently been bottled, and yet their quality is evident.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

2016 Poderi Colla Barbaresco Roncaglie
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Like the Cigliuti Vie Erte, this is a little and serious Barbaresco that would make Sergio proud. It is another one of those small family run wineries in Piemonte that somehow remains under the radar, despite being guided by one of the regions founding fathers - which is fine by us. The traditionally-spirited Poderi Colla Roncaglie is an expression that will outlive many Barolo from this historic vintage in the making for Piedmont. The wine simply screams freshness and purity of fruit and is one of those wines that pulls you in by the nose hairs with the signature nuances of dried rose petals, tar and red fruit. These flavors are joined on the palate with cherries, citrus, cinnamon, cedar, herbs, and minerals. This Barbaresco is classically built and rustic, expect to find tannic grip that wraps the teeth and packs a punch on the finish. The wine needs a little time to reveal itself and demands some food as you wait. In fact, the best results for this wine came after being open for 24 hours. This is for those that like classic Nebbiolo delivered with exceptional value. Kudos to Tina and Beppe Colla for this little rustic gem.”

95 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: A stellar wine, the 2016 Barbaresco Roncaglie is pretty, delicate and understated to the core. Rose petal, sweet spice, tobacco, mint, anise and sweet red cherry all grace this translucent, super-expressive Barbaresco from Poderi Colla. A Barbaresco of understatement and class, the 2016 is light on its feet, persistent and finely sculpted. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner sweetness and perfume, but the 2016 also needs time in bottle to be at its best. This is such a gorgeous wine.”
