Quintarelli Amarone Riserva Sale! Towering Rinaldi Barolo! Cru Fontodi Sangiovese!
August 14, 2017
A Note from Sergio

When most people think of Italian wine, they think of two regions first: Piemonte and its Barolos and Barbarescos, and Toscana and its Brunello, Chianti Classico, and Super-Tuscan wines. Today's eLetter celebrates these regions with a pair of outstanding, traditional, pure wines that are unadulterated Italian beauty: Guiseppe Rinaldi's majestic '06 Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo-Ravera and Fontodi's elegant '14 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo. Rinaldi is one of the standard bearers of organic, authentic, long-aging and ethereal Barolo, and today's wine will drink for decades. Like Rinaldi, Fontodi adheres to organic agriculture, and it strives to make wines that embody its outstanding terroir. The cru Vigna del Sorbo will delight Sangiovese purists.

But these two wines are not the stars of today's eLetter, even if their regions shine bright in the imaginations of Italian wine fans. The star of today's offer comes from the Veneto, a region that's usually a distant third to Piemonte and Toscana, even though its Valpolicella and Amarone are no less important, age-worthy and collectable. Even more important, these featured wines come from the late, great Giuseppe Quintarelli, a towering force in Italian winemaking. Working with traditional methods, Bepi raised the bar for Veneto's wines by remaking Valpolicella into a serious wine and by consistently crafting otherworldly Amarone that set the standard. What Bepi did in the vineyards and in the cantina remains a kind of mystery, and his magic has shaped our palates and our lives.

Today's spotlight features seven outrageous Quintarelli Amarone Riserva wines dating from 1971 to 2003. Drinking a Quintarelli wine is like entering a rocket ship--it takes you places you'd never guess you'd visit. True wine aficionados owe their palates this experience, and the special pricing on these wines will help you get there. These Quintarelli wines come from a private cellar with perfect provenance, a traceable line straight from producer to us, and from us to you. They haven't been jostled at auction. They haven't spent a moment in the heat or in the sun. They have been cared for every moment of their maturity, and now they're ready for you and the people you love.

Enjoy!

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone Valpolicella Riserva 2003 750ml
Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone Valpolicella Riserva 2003 750ml
Price: $799.00

Juicy red and blue fruits dance with incense, Christmas cake, kirsch, warm saddle leather, espresso, earth, and cigar wrapper in this bewitching, ageless ’03 Amarone Riserva. Velvety and caressing, this wine wraps the palate with unrestrained voluptuousness, unfolding its tantalizing layers to slowly reveal a crescendo of flavors. Fine-grained tannins cling to the cheeks, while savory, earthy notes balance the wine’s explosive fruit, creating a harmonious concert for its lucky drinker. Full-bodied and complex, this exquisite Amarone Riserva is drinking wonderfully now, but it’ll be enjoyable for decades to come. Quintarelli’s collector's wine is the benchmark for all Amarone, composed primarily of the indigenous Corvina blended with Rondinella and traces of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Sangiovese, which are partially dried in the appassimento method prior to vinification through very traditional means. more info

1990 was heralded as one of the great Veneto vintages of the late twentieth century, and upon release this Quintarelli Amarone Riserva was praised for its complexity, its velvety mouth-feel, its seductive power, and its electric energy. Now with almost thirty years of perfect maturity, this wine is stunning, unfurling myriad layers of flavors--juicy red and blue fruits, dried plums, Christmas cake, incense, tarry earth, warm leather, umami, black tea, and so many more. Rich and complex, this wine is nonetheless vibrant, shimmering across the palate to a lingering, resonant crescendo. This collector's wine is primarily from the indigenous Corvina along with Rondinella, Molinara, Negrara and traces of Cabernet, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo, made in the painstaking appassimento method. This wine is a hedonist’s delight, a wine to be savored and meditated upon, and it’s a fitting tribute to one of the world’s greatest winemakers ever to have lived. more info

Describing Quintarelli Amarone Riserva is always pointless--its myriad notes render the wine beyond words--but rarely is this more true in the darkly gorgeous ’03 Amarone Valpolicella Riserva. Juicy red and blue fruits dance with incense, Christmas cake, kirsch, warm saddle leather and cigar wrapper in a bewitching bottling that is one of the final wines to come from the late, great Giuseppe Quintarelli himself. more info

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1995 1.5L
Price: $3,499.00

Upon release, Quintarelli’s ’95 Amarone Riserva was hailed as a triumph. Now with more than twenty years of maturity, this wine is proving to be a majestic beauty that evokes its maker’s hands in its structure, texture and sheer beauty. This wine bursts from the glass with a profusion of red and black fruits, melted chocolate, tarry earth, Christmas cake, underbrush, truffles and black tea. Filling the mouth with a silken weight, this Amarone remains supple and nimble owing to its vibrant core of acidity and its lively minerality. This is a wine that invites meditation: layer upon layer of flavors unfurl on the palate in a kaleidoscopic drinking experience that culminates in a lingering, resonant finish. While Quintarelli produces its Amarone only in exceptional vintages, the estate restricts its Amarone Riserva to very great vintages; this decades-old wine now sits in the center of its drinking window. This collector Amarone Riserva is a proprietary blend of indigenous Corvina with Rondinella and traces of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Sangiovese. more info
