Big, Beautiful Bottles of Benchmark Fontodi Chianti Classico! Faiveley Burgundy Sale!
August 16, 2019
A Note from Sergio

It's easy to forget Sangiovese's troubled past--or the troubled history of Chianti, the emblematic region of Sangiovese. While Chianti first was codified in 1716, historical slang called any vermillion or Florentine wine "Chianti," so in an effort to make it more uniform, nineteenth-century nobleman Baron Bettini Ricasoli came up with a definitive formula. Ricasoli advised that Sangiovese form Chianti's base, but that the wine should also include Canaiolo and white grapes--in fact he mandated that the region's vineyards grow specific percentages of these grapes. Long story short, this unfortunate combination led to the bad Chiantis from the 1970s, which led to the Super-Tuscan revolution, which happened when Tuscan wine producers decided that the rules were for fools.

More than fifty years have passed since the Super-Tuscan revolution began, and we've seen thirty years pass since Sangiovese and Chianti began revamping their image. The hard work of growers and winemakers has paid off, and the standards of the region have skyrocketed. Today, I'm very proud to shine a light on one of those great makers, Fontodi, and its classic, traditional and altogether delicious Chianti Classico. If you love Fontodi's Flaccianello, a mono-varietal Sangiovese Super Tuscan, you're going to love the estate's 2016 Chianti Classico. 2016 saw a ridiculously good growing year for Fontodi, and today's '16 Chianti Classico is a stunner, but as outstanding as this wine is now, it'll be even better in a few years.
