August 19, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Bolgheri's ability to turn out great Super Tuscans makes it easy to forget that the region is young and small. Yet despite its size and its youth, Bolgheri holds surprises. Today, I'm delighted to introduce IWM's clients to Michele Satta, a producer who is new to IWM, but not new to Bolgheri. One of Bolgheri's original garagiste winemakers, Michele Satta's estate was one of Bogheri's first six wine producers (the other five are Tenuta San Guido, Grattamacco, Ornellaia, Guado al Tasso, and Le Macchiole). In other words, Michael Satta, who started making wine at the tender age of 19, helped to put Bolgheri on the wine-world's map.

Aside from Satta's relatively long roots in Bolgheri, there is something else that sets this winemaker apart, and that is his belief in Sangiovese. Most Bolgheri Super Tuscans are composed of international, Bordeaux-style grape varietals, but Satta believes that Sangiovese is synonymous with Toscana. "Sangiovese is like Mozart," Satta has said, "you can listen to it a thousand times and always find something different." For this reason, the Michele Satta estate crafts wines that frame Sangiovese with Bolgheri's "international" grapes, creating a symphony of flavors and sensations that are profoundly Italian and out of this world.

It's exciting to be able to introduce you to Michele Satta, but it's even more thrilling to be able to do it with a wine that's almost 25 years old, and today's eLetter features Michele Satta 1995 Piastraia Bolgheri Rosso. I've always said that most Americans drink their Super Tuscans too young. Today's '95 Piastraia, a blend of equal parts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sangiovese, sits in the sweet spot of maturity. Vibrant yet mellow, this wine is a terrific introduction to its maker, and it's a very special look at Italy's evolving wine landscape. I think you're going to love it.

Finally, don't miss today's Louis Jadot flash sale--it's a collector Burgundy bonanza! Enjoy!

Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $299.00

Majestic, opulent yet still delicate and sophisticated, the ’12 Chapelle-Chambertin from Louis Jadot is a towering achievement. Ripe, rich cherries and berries waft with pencil lead, fruit cordial, saline minerals, underbrush, and spice in this broad-shouldered, energetic bottling. At once sappy and vibrant, this bottling shows tremendous structure, caressing tannins, and an extraordinarily long finish. Deriving from the estate’s east-facing Chapelle-Chambertin plot of very old vines situated between Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, the grapes for this wine ferment in vat for about a month and the wine ages for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels before bottling. This ’12 Chappelle-Chambertin is a gorgeous bottling that needs some time in the cellar for true enjoyment, but it will reward patient Burgheads with a sublime drinking experience. more info
