Burgundy Flash Sale, More Than 300 wines 15%-70% off
August 29, 2017
A Note from Sergio

Six or seven years ago, I decided to get serious about selling Burgundy. On its surface, this move might feel brash for a company with "Italian Wine" in its title, but the truth is that the line between Italian and French (or Italian and Spanish, or Italian and Slovenian, or even Italian and North or South American) had always been somewhat imaginary. For one thing, I'd stocked IWM's shelves with Champagne virtually from the first day we opened our doors. For another, winemakers have been borrowing protocol and stealing vine cuttings from one another for centuries. Why wouldn't I sell Burgundy? If it's authentic, delicious and real, it's a wine that belongs at IWM--and in your glass!

Today I'm delighted to announce a flash sale on more than 300 in-stock Burgundies, both red and white, both 750ml bottles and large formats. It's an embarrassment of wine riches--these are carefully sourced wines that articulate their terroir, traditions and typicity with loving care. It's a beautiful list of Burgundy wines that range in style, price point, and appellation but, however disparate, these bottles share one important thing: they're good enough to represent IWM. Enjoy mixing your case (or more) and enjoy drinking these Burgundies with the people you love!

Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Price: $92.99

Profoundly dense and rich, this ’11 Volnay is approachable and filled with sweet, ripe fruit, blending energy with a brooding profile, firm structure with elegance, and fine tannins with sauvage notes. This massive wine will certainly get better with time, but the its black and blue fruits, nuances of anise, violets, and wildflowers make this incredibly tempting to open now. A three-acre parcel of 25-year-old vines in very poor, very stony soil, Ronceret sits just under Champans; it’s the bottling its maker calls “My baby.” With its brambly fruits, exotic spices, rich earth, firm minerality and complex texture, his ’11 Ronceret is a palate-staining Burgundy that’s pure physical pleasure to drink, from its aromatic nose to its pyrotechnic finish. Just 100 cases made. more info
Serafin Pere & Fils Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2009 750ml
Serafin Pere & Fils Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2009 750ml
Price: $124.99

The nose of this ’09 Gevrey-Chambertin bursts with classic earthy, sauvage Gevrey-Chambertin notes, which lay a brooding foundation to the ripe, pure and succulent red and blue fruit, fresh-cut herbs and rain-spattered flowers. The old-vine grapes are apparent in this wine’s stunning complexity and textured mouth-feel; energetic yet lush, it wraps the palate in chewy, dense tannins that build to a lingering crescendo at the finish. The estate’s parcel of Gevrey-Chambertin vines age 55 years or more and abut the grand cru of Griotte-Chambertin; this wine enjoyed a cold soak before its fermentation that lasted 15 to 20 days, and it aged in entirely new oak for about twenty months before bottling. more info

Louis Jadot Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011 750ml
Louis Jadot Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011 750ml
Price: $289.00

Sappy yet pure red fruits rest on a bed of baking spices, licorice, crushed wildflowers, and earth in this sophisticated, silky ’11 Grand Echézeaux. Concentrated yet finessed, this wine turns a seductive round profile that vibrates on the palate as it builds to lingering, satisfying finish. Facing east-southeast, Jadot’s calcareous soil parcel of Echézeaux borders the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru vineyard. This wine ferments in temperature-controlled vats for about a month and ages in oak barrels for 18-20 months before bottling. Although enjoyable now with some decanting, this wine will be even more delicious in a decade. more info
Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $299.00

Majestic, opulent yet still delicate and sophisticated, the ’12 Chapelle-Chambertin from Louis Jadot is a towering achievement. Ripe, rich cherries and berries waft with pencil lead, fruit cordial, saline minerals, underbrush, and spice in this broad-shouldered, energetic bottling. At once sappy and vibrant, this bottling shows tremendous structure, caressing tannins, and an extraordinarily long finish. Deriving from the estate’s east-facing Chapelle-Chambertin plot of very old vines situated between Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, the grapes for this wine ferment in vat for about a month and the wine ages for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels before bottling. This ’12 Chappelle-Chambertin is a gorgeous bottling that needs some time in the cellar for true enjoyment, but it will reward patient Burgheads with a sublime drinking experience. more info

Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011 750ml
Domaine Jean Grivot Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011 750ml
Price: $425.00

This is one seductive, beguiling wine. Juicy red and black fruits mingle with fresh-cut herbs, crushed violets, licorice and sun-warmed earth in this medium-bodied, caressing ’11 Échézeaux. Showing Échézeaux’s typical roundness and sensuality, this ’11 bottling from Jean Grivot nonetheless has the tannic structure, acidic nerve and mineral drive to keep it drinking for years. This wine manages both to be beautifully delineated and powerful, crossing the palate with a muscular density and leaving copious dry extract as it builds to a lingering finish; it’s a stellar effort and one that true Burgundy connoisseurs will adore. Deriving from the estate’s two-acre Échézeaux parcel, the grapes for this wine fermented for just over two weeks, and the wine aged in oak, about half new. more info
Emmanuel Rouget Vosne Romanee Les Beaumonts 2011 750ml
Emmanuel Rouget Vosne Romanee Les Beaumonts 2011 750ml
Price: $499.00

Bright red fruits dance with minerals, fresh-cut herbs, and baking spices in this ’11 Vosne-Romanée that strides the line between delicacy and power. This wine opens on the palate to reveal a seductive inner perfume of fruit and sun-warmed earth, and its fine-grained tannins cling to the cheeks as it builds to a lovely, sustained finish. The Vosne Romanée Les Beaumonts come from a prime parcel located in Flagey where the vines average nearly fifty years with some as old as eighty years; although a stunning property, it's less than an acre, producing a mere 500 cases of this beauty each year. This wine ages entirely in new oak. more info
Joseph Drouhin Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2011 750ml
Joseph Drouhin Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru 2011 750ml
Price: $699.00

Intense, burly, structured, and vibrant, this ’11 Clos de Bèze bursts with brooding, sauvage notes, earth, exotic spices and rich, brambly wild berries. This is a very broad-shouldered wine that will need some time in the cellar for enjoyment, but with time, this massive wine will mellow, tame its tannins and become a total knockout. Joseph Drouhin’s Clos de Bèze parcel is just .325 acres, but this tiny clay, chalk, and gravel vineyard makes mighty wines. After vinifying with only natural yeasts and macerating for about three weeks in temperature-controlled stainless steel, this wine ages for 14-18 months in oak barrels, 20% new. more info
