Burgundy Flash Sale, More Than 300 wines 15%-70% off
August 29, 2017
A Note from Sergio

Six or seven years ago, I decided to get serious about selling Burgundy. On its surface, this move might feel brash for a company with "Italian Wine" in its title, but the truth is that the line between Italian and French (or Italian and Spanish, or Italian and Slovenian, or even Italian and North or South American) had always been somewhat imaginary. For one thing, I'd stocked IWM's shelves with Champagne virtually from the first day we opened our doors. For another, winemakers have been borrowing protocol and stealing vine cuttings from one another for centuries. Why wouldn't I sell Burgundy? If it's authentic, delicious and real, it's a wine that belongs at IWM--and in your glass!

Today I'm delighted to announce a flash sale on more than 300 in-stock Burgundies, both red and white, both 750ml bottles and large formats. It's an embarrassment of wine riches--these are carefully sourced wines that articulate their terroir, traditions and typicity with loving care. It's a beautiful list of Burgundy wines that range in style, price point, and appellation but, however disparate, these bottles share one important thing: they're good enough to represent IWM. Enjoy mixing your case (or more) and enjoy drinking these Burgundies with the people you love!

Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Price: $92.99

Profoundly dense and rich, this ’11 Volnay is approachable and filled with sweet, ripe fruit, blending energy with a brooding profile, firm structure with elegance, and fine tannins with sauvage notes. This massive wine will certainly get better with time, but the its black and blue fruits, nuances of anise, violets, and wildflowers make this incredibly tempting to open now. A three-acre parcel of 25-year-old vines in very poor, very stony soil, Ronceret sits just under Champans; it’s the bottling its maker calls “My baby.” With its brambly fruits, exotic spices, rich earth, firm minerality and complex texture, his ’11 Ronceret is a palate-staining Burgundy that’s pure physical pleasure to drink, from its aromatic nose to its pyrotechnic finish. Just 100 cases made. more info
Serafin Pere & Fils Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2009 750ml
Serafin Pere & Fils Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2009 750ml
Price: $124.99

The nose of this ’09 Gevrey-Chambertin bursts with classic earthy, sauvage Gevrey-Chambertin notes, which lay a brooding foundation to the ripe, pure and succulent red and blue fruit, fresh-cut herbs and rain-spattered flowers. The old-vine grapes are apparent in this wine’s stunning complexity and textured mouth-feel; energetic yet lush, it wraps the palate in chewy, dense tannins that build to a lingering crescendo at the finish. The estate’s parcel of Gevrey-Chambertin vines age 55 years or more and abut the grand cru of Griotte-Chambertin; this wine enjoyed a cold soak before its fermentation that lasted 15 to 20 days, and it aged in entirely new oak for about twenty months before bottling. more info

Domaine Ponsot Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee du Pinson 2012 1.5L
Domaine Ponsot Bourgogne Rouge Cuvee du Pinson 2012 1.5L
Price: $196.00

This ’12 Bourgogne marries its vivacious acidity with its silky mouth-feel in this outstanding bottling. Succulent, pure Pinot Noir fruit sits on a bed of sun-warmed earth, baking spices, a kiss of underbrush, and a sprinkling of crushed flower petals. Ripe and round in the mouth, this wine has the kind of driving acidity and chewy tannins that make it feel almost electric with life. Deriving from a 1.2-acre vineyard planted in 1975, the grapes for this wine ferment with only natural yeasts in oak vats for about two weeks; then the wine ages in used barrels for about two years before making the final blend and bottling without fining or filtration. more info

Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2010 750ml
Price: $199.00

Big, broad-shouldered, and generous, this ’10 Clos de la Roche bursts from the glass in a shower of brambly berry fruits, gamey notes, truffles, underbrush, fresh-cut herbs, and pencil lead. This is a rich, enveloping wine that coats the palate with copious dry extract and chewy, fine-grained tannins. However open-knit, this Burgundy is nimble on its feet, owing to its rich mineral core and sprightly acidity, and it lingers on the finish with satisfying complexity. Deriving from the estate’s east-facing Clos de la Roche vineyard, the grapes for this wine ferment in vats for about a month, and the wine ages in oak barrels for eighteen to twenty months before bottling. more info

Sappy yet pure red fruits rest on a bed of baking spices, licorice, crushed wildflowers, and earth in this sophisticated, silky ’11 Grand Echézeaux. Concentrated yet finessed, this wine turns a seductive round profile that vibrates on the palate as it builds to lingering, satisfying finish. Facing east-southeast, Jadot’s calcareous soil parcel of Echézeaux borders the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru vineyard. This wine ferments in temperature-controlled vats for about a month and ages in oak barrels for 18-20 months before bottling. Although enjoyable now with some decanting, this wine will be even more delicious in a decade. more info

Louis Jadot Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $289.00

A sumptuous deep ruby red in the glass, this ’12 Mazis-Chambertin is massive yet it’s also precise, holding its drinker in delightful tension. Black cherries and blue fruits explode on the nose, mingling with earth, sauvage, and spices; this wine oozes across the palate, slowly unfolding myriad flavor notes, all complemented by chewy tannins and a rich inner perfume. Deriving from a gently sloping clay and limestone vineyard that abuts Jadot’s Chambertin-Clos-de-Bèze grand cru holdings, the grapes for this wine ferment in vats for three or four weeks and then age in oak barrels for three or four months before bottling. This wine needs to cellar for a few years, but it will delight for decades. more info

Price: $289.00

Red and blue fruits dance with brooding notes of baking spices, melted chocolate, coffee beans, warm earth and crushed wildflowers in this fleshy, elegant wine. Velvety tannins grip the palate as this wine builds to a persistent, intense, and finessed finish. This old-vine Clos St. Denis (upwards of ninety years) is one of the last bottlings crafted by the great Jacques Lardière before his retirement in 2012. Powerful yet elegant, reserved yet ripe, intense yet nuanced, this ’12 offers a fitting testament to its maker, Jacques Lardière, who retired in 2012. Now with a half-decade of maturity, this wine has entered its drinking window. more info

Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $299.00

Majestic, opulent yet still delicate and sophisticated, the ’12 Chapelle-Chambertin from Louis Jadot is a towering achievement. Ripe, rich cherries and berries waft with pencil lead, fruit cordial, saline minerals, underbrush, and spice in this broad-shouldered, energetic bottling. At once sappy and vibrant, this bottling shows tremendous structure, caressing tannins, and an extraordinarily long finish. Deriving from the estate’s east-facing Chapelle-Chambertin plot of very old vines situated between Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, the grapes for this wine ferment in vat for about a month and the wine ages for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels before bottling. This ’12 Chappelle-Chambertin is a gorgeous bottling that needs some time in the cellar for true enjoyment, but it will reward patient Burgheads with a sublime drinking experience. more info
