$30 Guado al Tasso! 1995 Quintarelli Amarone Riserva! And Rosé Flash Sale!
August 9, 2018
A Note from Sergio

Like most Italian houses, mine has a patio, and in the summer vines grow across the arbor that frames it, making a green idyll where my family and I eat or just hang out. To the right of the patio is the grill. It's not an American grill; it's not a block of technology, blue-lit gas flames and black metal. It's brick and mortar. You have to build a fire and make your own charcoal. It has both a metal grill and a little oven. It's rustic and fussy and time-consuming, and I love it.

I've grilled succulent capretto, or baby goat, and I've licked its juices from my fingers and watched my guests do the same. I've grilled maiale, or pork, and listened with satisfaction as its fat crackled and popped against the hot coals. I've grilled great slabs of vegetables, brushed translucent with olive oil and sprinkled with fresh herbs. I've grilled fish and watched the delicate flesh turn nearly opaque before I swept it off the heat and onto the plates of my waiting, salivating guests. And, of course, I have grilled steak, the air turning fragrant as the edges of the meat blackened deliciously.

And, of course, I pour wine to go with these grilled delights, because to Italians, wine is an irreplaceable part of the meal. For today's eLetter, I've selected wines that make grilled food sing. First, there's a deeply delicious, extremely affordable Super Tuscan from the Antinori family's Guado al Tasso estate, its 2016 Il Bruciato. This wine is juicy, savory, minerally and electric--it's a food-friendly, genial Super-Tuscan red that everyone will love. I've also chosen nine rosé wines, and I've put them all on sale! August is hot, and these beautiful blush bottles are perfect with simple meals of grilled vegetables and fish, and they'll cool you from the inside out!

Finally, I scored a few magnum bottles of Quintarelli's mind-blowing 1995 Amarone Riserva--don't miss them!

Per Linda Cerasuolo 2015 750ml
Per Linda Cerasuolo 2015 750ml
Price: $12.99

Offering a vibrant cherry hue, this wine bursts with succulent vine-ripened blackberries, crisp orchard fruits, dew-laden roses and crushed saline minerals; it’s a treat for the senses! A gentle but persistent acidity complements the fruit-forward flavors of this ’15 Cerasuolo, and cheek-piquing minerals linger on the finish, making this charming wine very food-friendly. Grapes ferment in temperature-controlled steel for about two weeks, and the wine ages in stainless steel for six months before bottling. Cerasuolo, the Abbruzzese word for "rosé," shows us how delicious and practical a blush wine made from the Montepulciano grape can be; pair it with classic fish dishes of the Adriatic, as well as pizza and tomato-based pastas. more info

Dry and fleshy, this Marcillac rosé offers bitter cherry and raspberry flavors, making it perfect for wine-lovers looking for a fruit-driven wine reminiscent of a Pinot Noir rosé. This mono-varietal Fer Servadou, called “Mansois” locally, grows on steep terraces with red clay soils just west of Rodez in Languedoc, on a hillside terrace at 1,000-1,600 feet above sea level. Domaine Laurens, organic and family owned and operated, harvests its Fer Servadou by hand in early October, destemming, pressing, and using the saignée method to craft its deep cherry rosé. more info

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1995 1.5L
Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1995 1.5L
Price: $3,499.00

Upon release, Quintarelli’s ’95 Amarone Riserva was hailed as a triumph. Now with more than twenty years of maturity, this wine is proving to be a majestic beauty that evokes its maker’s hands in its structure, texture and sheer beauty. This wine bursts from the glass with a profusion of red and black fruits, melted chocolate, tarry earth, Christmas cake, underbrush, truffles and black tea. Filling the mouth with a silken weight, this Amarone remains supple and nimble owing to its vibrant core of acidity and its lively minerality. This is a wine that invites meditation: layer upon layer of flavors unfurl on the palate in a kaleidoscopic drinking experience that culminates in a lingering, resonant finish. While Quintarelli produces its Amarone only in exceptional vintages, the estate restricts its Amarone Riserva to very great vintages; this decades-old wine now sits in the center of its drinking window. This collector Amarone Riserva is a proprietary blend of indigenous Corvina with Rondinella and traces of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Sangiovese. more info
