Concentrated yet precise, large-scaled but finessed, this ’14 Montestefano Riserva is a superb effort. Sweet, ripe red and blue fruits cavort against a savory backdrop of balsamic herbs, underbrush, saline minerals, new leather, and warm earth in a focused, sophisticated nose. Austere tannins and bracing acidity complement one another, offering remarkable balance and structure for long-term aging. Patient wine-lovers will be rewarded by generously cellaring this outstanding wine. Often referred to as the “Barolo of Barbaresco” because of its commanding personality, great structure and firm tannins and producing Barbarescos reminiscent of its neighbor Neive, the 11-acre Montestefano cru sits at about 900 feet above sea level, sporting soils of calcareous limestone and a prime southern exposure. After fermenting for 28 days with temperature control, the wine ages for 36 months in botti, followed by a year in bottle.

The ’14 Muncagota Riserva dances with the delicacy and sneaky power of a ballerina. Graceful, crisp red and blue fruits mingle with rose petals, peppery spices, black licorice, cherry cordial, forest floor, and pencil lead in this alluring, textured wine. One of the most immediately approachable wines from Produttori’s 2014 lineup, the Muncagota Riserva fills the mouth with silky tannins and dry extract that are animated by vivid acidity and a sturdy mineral spine--drink now with ample decanting or cellar for enjoyment down the road. 2007 was the first production year for the cru Muncagota, which used to be called Moccagotta. Deriving from the 9.8-acre Muncagota plot, whose high elevation and dense, calcium-rich soils help to make a structured, aromatic wine, the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel for four weeks; the wine ages for 36 months in botti, followed by a year in bottle before release.

Muscular and round, the ’14 Ovello Riserva feels satisfyingly plush, yet its piercing minerality and drive keep it focused and structured. Super-ripe red and blue fruits layer with fresh-pressed herbs, crushed river rocks, violet petals, peppery spices and a kiss of blood orange in this captivating wine. One of Produttori del Barbaresco’s larger crus at sixteen acres, the south-southwest-facing Ovello plot boasts clay and calcareous limestone soils and elevations between 720 and 950 feet above sea level. Fermented for 28 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged for three years in botti and one year in bottle, this is one of Prodduttori del Barbaresco’s most long-aging Barbarescos; Ovello needs time to come into its own.

For all its overt roundness, this wine holds serious structure, matching its round tannins with elegant acidity; enjoyable now, this beautifully built Barbaresco Riserva will drink for years and years to come. Touching the esteemed Asili vineyard on one corner, the 18-acre Pora cru sits at about 980 feet above sea level and sports soils of calcareous limestone with sandy veins. Grapes ferment for 28 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine ages for three years in botti, followed by a year in bottle before release.

Mid-weight and open-knit, this wine pairs its round, polished tannins with a bright skein of acidity, layering smoky minerals on its lingering finish. Deriving from a 12-acre southwest-facing vineyard of calcareous limestone with sandy veins sitting at about 900 feet above sea level, the grapes for this wine ferment for about four weeks in temperature-controlled vats, and the wine ages for 36 months in botti, followed by a year in bottle. This wine derives from 45 to 50-year-old Nebbiolo vines grown in the estate’s 7.41-acre Valeirano vineyard, a south-facing plot with calcareous rocky soil. After handpicking, the grapes ferment for about a week in temperature-controlled vats, and then age first in new oak barrique for 20 to 22 months, then stainless steel for three months, followed by a year in bottle before release.
