Now with more than a decade of maturity, the ’05 Barbaresco Elisa is hitting its stride. Tertiary notes of game, black tea and dusty minerals frame the wine’s primary, vibrant red and blue fruits and its secondary notes of forest floor, cigar wrapper, and violet petals. Lush, fine-grained tannins cling to the cheeks while the wine’s nicely acidic core propels it to a lingering finish marked by smoky minerality and a velvety texture. The most graceful of Ada Nada’s three Barbarescos, Elisa derives from Nebbiolo vines that are about forty years old grown in calcareous marl. After macerating in temperature-controlled stainless steel, Elisa ages in oak casks for around a year and a half, after which it’s bottled without filtration. The result is a lithe, winsome Barbaresco that shows cherries, strawberries, herbs and minerals. The ’05 Barbaresco Elisa is drinking fantastically right now. The small winery of San Giuliano rests its head on the historic hillside vineyard of the same name but subsumes a total of 7 hectares of vineyards spread throughout the Piemonte zones of Roero, Asti, Neive, and Barbaresco. Owner-enologist Giulio Pastura carries on his grandfather’s trade but has turned from bulk sales to high quality bottlings. Giulio and his wife, Mariella Stupino, do both the vineyard and the cellar work themselves, producing a varied line of reliable wines from the region’s native Nebbiolo, Moscato, Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis, and Brachetto. Their lovely, accessible Barbarescos follow the tradition of aging in oak botti for 18 months. more info

Just now entering its drinking window, this ’09 Barbaresco Montestefano explodes from the glass with fistfuls of cherries and berries, warm baking spices, cigar wrapper, and kisses of cedar and violet petals. This wine may be broad shouldered, but its chewy tannins, electric acidity and sturdy mineral core keep it nimble--and make it very age-worthy. Often referred to as the “Barolo of Barbaresco” because of its commanding personality, great structure and firm tannins and producing Barbarescos reminiscent of its neighbor Nieve, the Montestefano cru sits at about 900 feet above sea level, sporting soils of calcareous limestone and a prime southern exposure. After fermenting for 28 days with temperature control, the wine ages for 36 months in botti, followed by six months in bottle. more info

Precise yet approachable, the ’09 Orvello was ready to drink upon release, and a few extra years have served to tame its chewy tannins and integrate its elements--it’s an unabashedly seductive wine that blends sophistication with power. One of Barbaresco’s larger crus at sixteen acres, the south-southwest-facing Ovello plot boasts clay and calcareous limestone soils and elevations between 720 and 950 feet above sea level. Fermented for 28 days in stainless steel and aged for three years in botti and six months in bottle, this is one of Prodduttori del Barbaresco’s most long-aging Barbarescos; Ovello needs time to come into its own. more info
