Bodega Chacra Pinot Noir Rio Negro Barda 2010 750ml
A Burgundian profile of rose petals, red cherries, ripe strawberries and sweet herbs rest on an elegant, delicate framework in this charming, accessible Pinot Noir. It's not a stretch to say that the '10 Barda may become your new favorite companion for dinner with friends. Let it breathe for an hour, and then drink it now--or five years from now.
Subregion: Rio Negro
Bodega Chacra is something of a dynastic operation. The estate is the project of Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Mario Incisa, the man behind the seminal Super-Tuscan wine, Sassicaia. In many ways, Piero follows in his grandfather’s trailblazing footsteps. Just as Mario Incisa followed his dream to create a Bordeaux-style blend in the outback of Bolgheri, Piero had a dream of crafting a Burgundy-style wine outside of France. Piero’s dream took him on a bumpy ride to an arid, windswept plain in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, where he found a plot of land with an abandoned vineyard planted in 1932. In 2004, Piero founded Bodega Chacra on that spot.
Since 2004 and that first plot of Pinot Noir, Piero has added to the estate, purchasing additional vineyards and planting Merlot. Bodega Chacra’s pre-existing vineyards sport pristine pre-phylloxera old-vine Pinot Noir, vines that are ugrafted and free of clonal selection. Piero uses biodynamic agriculture in the vineyards, which he farms by hand, and he continues that noninterventionist practice in the cellar, using whole bunch fermentation at cool temperature with only natural yeasts. He ages the wine in old oak French barrels, and he bottles it without fining or filtration.
Currently, Bodega Chacra boasts three Pinot Noir bottlings: the flagship Trienta y Dos, a single-vineyard expression deriving from a vineyard planted in 1932; its feminine counterpart, Chacra Cincuenta y Cinco, a cru from a vineyard planted in 1955; and the entry-level Barda, composed of declassified grapes from the previous two bottlings as well as grapes from younger vines. The estate also has a single Merlot bottling, Mainqué, which debuted in 2006. All of the Bodega Chacra wines offer an alcohol level that’s lower than typical varietal bottlings, a personal preference of their maker. And all offer pure Patagonian beauty, as envisioned by a Sassicaia scion.
