Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com: “A wine I continue to buy in every vintage, the 2020 Château Tour Saint-Christophe looks to be another no-brainer for the Saint-Emilion lovers out there. Coming from a gorgeous, terraced vineyard on the eastern side of the appellation and based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, it has a perfumed, elegant, pure style in its darker cherry and cassis fruits as well as classic cedarwood, earth, and forest floor aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and just beautiful on the palate, with terrifically integrated acidity and tannins, it’s going to round into form nicely with just short-term bottle age and have two decades of prime drinking. This wine is still resting in 40% new French oak and has an alcohol of 14.7% with a pH of 3.6.” 05/21

James Suckling, jamessuckling.com: “Full-bodied and creamy with lots of spice and walnut character. Lovely softness and purity. Black fruit at the end. Very fine tannins. Well-integrated.” 4/21

Echo de Lynch Bages 2009 375ml
Echo de Lynch Bages 2009 375ml
In Stock, Limited Quantity
Price: $51.99
Special Price: $44.99

The wine of Château Lynch-Bages is part of the lineage of the great Pauillac wines. Blended mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon, it combines structure and finesse, elegance and longevity. It is further distinguished by its opulence. Generous right from its youth, it develops more flavours and greater complexity as it matures.

The affirmation of the Lynch-Bages style came with the arrival of Jean-Charles Cazes to head the estate in 1934. An innovative winemaker, emblematic of a new generation of owners willing to break with tradition and taking risks to ensure truly ripe harvests, he was known for often being the last to harvest in Pauillac. From 1945 onwards, the fame of the château emerged thanks to a series of great vintages. Some, despite being considered difficult to grow in Bordeaux, are particularly successful at Lynch-Bages. His wines are characterized by their deep colour, their tannic structure, their controlled concentration and elegant sensuality. The vintages vinified by André Cazes, and after him Jean-Michel Cazes, confirm this trend.

The style of the wines has refined over the years, gaining suppleness and softness, whilst their consistency has been established over time. Then as now, Château Lynch-Bages has been characterised by its extraordinary qualitative homogeneity. Powerful, elegant and open, vintage after vintage, the wine has acquired greater accuracy, adding distinction to the hedonistic character that made its reputation.

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Tasted six times. I earmarked this wine when I tasted it from barrel more than three years ago at the Chateau, and it has consistently delivered on its promise. It is a bottle that is so much more than a mere 'second wine' and is certainly more unique and interesting than many first labels in Saint Estephe (and beyond). The quality at Cos d’Estournel has improved so much over the past decade that it has trickled down to the second wine, with many taking notice and stating that the Pagodes is “equal to most estates’ top wines,” “a serious wine,” “top-class Saint-Estèphe.” It is true, you can even say that this second wine is better than many of the “grand vin” of the past. I actually preferred it to the controversial 100-Point 2009 Cos d’Estournel, as the 2016 sheds the over extraction of past years to reveal a more true sense of terroir, with the signature stony minerality of the estate showing through in the wine. But what this wine is all about is approachability, on the palate and in the pocket. It is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46.5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 0.6% Cabernet Franc from old vines, averaging more than 35 years of age. The wine captures the vintage and is marked by freshness, energy, charm and texture (fine tannins with high acidity). Right from the pull of the cork the nose exudes stony minerality with both red and black fruits. On the palate you can expect nuances blackberry, black cherry, wild herbs, spice, wet rocks, salinity and a touch of smoke. It is a higher-toned expression of this wine, but packaged with awesome texture, tremendous balance, and a concentrated core hinting at what is to come. It is delicious today and another MUST BUY from the pinnacle vintage.” more info

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “We tasted this next to the 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte and 2020 Les Carmes Haut Brion, and what we can say is Pessac Leognan did deliver what are some of the wines of the vintage. Each unique in their own way, the Domaine de Chevalier is elegance personified. An expansive mouthful of red and black fruit but yet so light on its feet. You will find nuances of herbs and minerality, but what really stands out is the soft touch, the awesome tannin management - it is just so fresh and well balanced. We found the wine more feminine than the more powerful Smith Haut Lafitte. Since 2014 this has been a must buy wine in every vintage, easily the one of the great values in Bordeaux alongside Grand Puy Lacoste and Pavie Macquin. I look back at the standout 2016s that were released at $69.99 as well, and now commands $99+. It is a great example of why buy en primeur at all levels. This is a wine of the vintage selection for IWM.” more info

Bordeaux Future - Arrival Fall 2023
Price: $114.99

Neal Martin, Vinous: "The 2020 Léoville Barton was picked September 15–16 and matured in 70% new oak. It is one of the best vintages that I have encountered in barrel. Wow! This shoots from the glass with beautifully defined black fruit, mineral-rich aromas, pixelated with laser-like focus. The palate is medium-bodied with chiseled tannins, a perfect line of acidity, layers of vibrant, vivacious black fruit and a very persistent finish that is pure class. If you don’t have this in your cellar, then there will be a Léoville Barton–shaped hole to fill." more info

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “Why don’t more people talk about this wine – the answer, at 1600 cases, this is small artisanal Bordeaux. Only a few retailers carry the wine, but it is well-worth the search. It is another terroir-driven expression from Pessac-Léognan, but it is more finessed, vibrant and red fruited than many of its neighbors. This is undoubtedly in part to the high percentage of Cabernet Franc (which we love) and high percentage (50%) use of whole cluster. But it is a wine of contrast with a yin and yang quality to it. While there is concentration, there is restraint with underlying grip, precision, and energy with an inner perfume to it. The wine wears its Pessac minerality and graphite well, with a Burgundian-like touch. Expect nuances of juicy wild berries, plums, crushed flowers, stone, saline, pepper and herbs. The best is still yet to come. A wine and estate to watch and certainly another MUST-BUY recommendation from 2020 as this is the beginning of greatness.” more info
