Alain Gras Auxey Duresses Rouge 2010 750ml
Alain Gras, one of the most talented vignerons in the Cote de Beaune, essentially put his tiny appellation of Saint-Roman on the map. While little known in the States, Alain Gras’ wines stud the wine lists of many Michelin-starred restaurants in France. This fresh, complex ’10 Auxey Duresse Rouge--a wine made from vines over a hundred years old--shows why. An intense wine, it unfolds to show uncommon depth, great suppleness and a velvety mouth-feel, all the better to complement its ripe, sappy fruit. Only 300-500 cases made of this Auxey that drinks like a Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru.
Chateau Belair Monange St. Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe 2007 750ml
A wine made in the vineyard with non-interventionist practices, this ’07 St-Émilion shines even in a difficult vintage, but given that the estate’s storied history, this is hardly surprising. In the nose and on the palate, berries kiss the forest floor, as smoke and spice waft, exotically. Cheery acidity, velvety tannins, and a noteworthy structure complete the Chateau Belair profile. Sweet fruit, smoke, and floral aromatics engage in a delicate dance; however, the ‘07’s serious structure guides this waltz with a commanding hand. Crafted from organically grown grapes and made with non-interventionist protocol, including manual labor and only natural yeasts, the Château Bélair-Monange offers a pure expression of Saint-Émilion terroir.
Chateau Lagrange St Julien 2005 750ml
Chateau Clinet 2008 750ml
Reflecting its extended, cool growing season, the ’08 Pomerol from Clinet bristles with energy, saturates the palate with purple and blue fruits, studs the cheeks with chewy tannins, and shows myriad layers of flavor notes. A seductive nose of brambly berries and plums, melted chocolate, pencil lead, lilac petals, licorice and espresso wafts from the glass, echoing on the palate that marries savory and sweet notes with terrific balance. Just entering its drinking window, this wine will be enjoyable for decades to come. In 2008, this wine is a blend of 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, deriving from vines averaging 45 years of age; the wine aged in a mixture of 60% new barriques and 40% used.
Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2008 750ml
At once brilliant and dense, finessed and decadent, ethereal and weighty, the 2008 flagship bottling is a towering achievement for Pontet-Canet. Upon release, this wine was lauded for its pure, intense fruit, its hedonistic richness, and its exquisite balance--in fact, it was hailed as the wine of the vintage! Now with more than a decade of maturity, this Pauillac is coming into its own, layering its crisp red and brambly blue fruits with crushed pencil lead, pressed rose petals, fresh herbs, cedar wood, underbrush, and smoke. Round tannins, electric acidity, and piquant minerality balance out the wine’s intense dry extract; poised on the edge of its drinking window, this ’08 Pauillac will drink for decades to come! A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot in 2008, the fruit for this wine is biodynamically grown and hand-harvested, then it macerates for about a month, before aging in barrel (at least one-third used) for 16 to 20 months before bottling.
Chateau d'Yquem Sauternes 2008 375ml
The ’08 d'Yquem Sauternes is a knockout. Spiced orchard fruits, crushed river rocks, delicate oak, pressed flower petals and kisses of tropical fruits mingle and meld into a seamless, delicate and sneakily powerful whole. Lush as this wine is, it holds a serious acidic spine that drives it to a lingering, dense finish. Château d'Yquem’s skilled pickers hand-select the vines’ fully botrytized fruit, and yields are so low that each vine produces only one glass of wine. Vintage after vintage, Château d'Yquem continues to set the bar not merely for Sauternes, but for fine dessert wines around the world.
Chateau d'Yquem Sauternes 2006 375ml
Delightfully pure and transparent, the ’06 d’Yquem bursts from the glass with a profusion of exotic white flowers, coconut, beeswax, and succulent stone and citrus fruits. This is a very fresh d’Yquem bottling that privileges delicacy and raciness over opulence and richness. A bass note of buttery saline minerals adds complexity to a lovely, complex wine.
Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2016 750ml
A stunning effort, Pontet-Canet’s 2016 flagship marries intensity with precision, savory elements with super-ripe fruits, opulence with brisk acidity, and relative approachability with extreme longevity. Fistfuls of crisp red and brambly blue fruits mingle with potpourri, cigar wrapper, licorice, underbrush, black tea, and pencil lead in a kaleidoscopic array of notes. Polished and powerful, this wine unfolds on the palate to show exquisite balance between its chewy tannins and vivid acidity, while pure, sappy fruits find their complement in a serious mineral core. This powerhouse Bordeaux needs a few years in the cellar, but it’ll drink for decades to come--it’s a wine for the ages! A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot in 2016, the fruit for this wine is biodynamically grown and hand-harvested, then it macerates for about a month, before aging for about 16 months in a combination of 55% new barrel, 35% cement amphora, and 15% neutral oak.
Chateau d'Yquem Sauternes 2005 375ml
Concentrated yet pure, acidic yet rich, spicy yet fruit-laden, the ’05 d'Yquem Sauternes embraces its opposites to create a thrilling, delicious experience. Green stone fruits, honeyed citrus, almond paste, exotic spices, and crushed flower petals burst from the glass; on the palate, this medium-sweet wine shows structure and delicacy, offset by luscious unctuousness. Château d'Yquem’s skilled pickers hand-select the vines’ fully botrytized fruit, and yields are so low that each vine produces only one glass of wine. Vintage after vintage, Château d'Yquemcontinues to set the bar not merely for Sauternes, but for fine dessert wines around the world.
