Balancing its super-ripe fruits with its ebullient personality, this ’17 Chianti Classico is pure pleasure. Fistfuls of brambly berries and luscious cherries mingle with underbrush, mint, licorice, violet petals, new leather, blood orange zest, and a smear of blackberry jam in this scrumptious Chianti Classico. Fine-grained tannins, a sweet inner lift, and vivid acidity form a delicious whole in Castello dei Rampolla’s drink-me-now ’17 Chianti Classico, but make no mistake, this wine will drink beautifully over the medium term. This biodynamically grown and vinified Chianti Classico, a blend of 90% Sangiovese with the remainder split between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, spends three months fermenting in concrete; the wine ages for a year in barrel, followed by six months in bottle prior to release.

Overshadowed by the legendary “-aia” triumvirate of Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Solaia, are the excellent wines of Castello dei Rampolla. This estate crafts some of the most highly regarded wines of Toscana—the Vigna d’Alceo is consistently a Three Glass winner. The cellars of the Rampolla winery, near Panzano in central Tuscany, date back to the 13th century and are situated on just under 105 acres of calcareous soil. Ideal for Sangiovese, Rampolla’s vineyards grow especially flavorful fruit with potential for long aging. Aided by the famous consultant oenologist, Giacomo Tachis, the estate’s di Napoli family combines biodynamic methods in its vineyards and modern technology in its cellars to produce world-class wines. The Chianti Classico bottling accounts for approximately 100,000 of the total 150,000 bottle production. The remainder is divided between the Riserva, the Sammarco and their white, Trebianco.
