Although the Napa Valley vineyard had started as a negociant house in the 1940s, Caymus got its formal start in 1972. Charles Wagner had served his homemade wine to winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff and impressed him so much that Wagner decided to begin bottling his own wine. While the classic California Cab Sauv flavor profile will captivate any fan of the genre, this Caymus, handpicked from the best lots of the estate's vineyards, bottling sweetens the deal with a satiny texture, fine tannins, and a delicious complexity that lets it complement foods from steak to Camembert cheese to chocolate desserts.

Although the Napa Valley vineyard had started as a negociant house in the 1940s, Caymus got its formal start in 1972. Charles Wagner had served his homemade wine to winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff and impressed him so much that Wagner decided to begin bottling his own wine. The 73-acre property was in prime position for it--in the ‘60s, Wagner had begun replanting it with Cabernet Sauvignon clones from Nathan Fay, the man who also planted Stag’s Leap. In 1984, Charles’ son Chuck took the helm of the estate, and since that time, the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon wine Caymus Special Selection has won the Wine Spectator’s “Wine of the Year” award twice; Caymus is the only winery to hold that honor.
