Christopher Deas: “Tasted twice from barrel. The first barrel sample the IWM Team tasted from the 2020 vintage is a special one, and Châteaux Angelus will undoubtedly be a reference point from Saint-Émilion. We tasted the wines on April 25th and can tell you there is an awesome approachability and elegance to the 2020 Angelus, the tannins are seemless, and it did remind us of the style of 2019 with the texture and fruit, even 2018 a little bit. You can expect explosive black fruit, blackberries, plum, wild berries with a touch of herbs and salinity. But while there is expansive concentration upfront with a silky and seductive texture, there is more restraint here than the last two years, and the wines is amazingly fresh and light on its feet. The finish shows there is a lot more depth to the wine, with a little more firmness and snap on the back. In tasting the Angelus over the past decade from barrel, this wine will be well received, I mean, really well-received. It will be one of the wines of the vintage for the Right Bank and a benchmark for the estate that just keeps getting better.”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: “The 2020 Angélus has an opaque purple-black color, pulling you in with a captivating perfume of kirsch, Black Forest cake, ripe plums, violets and molten licorice, followed by wafts of underbrush, raspberry leaves and graphite, plus a hint of clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate already offers beautiful balance and expression at this nascent stage, featuring bright, crunchy red and black fruits with remarkable energy and tension. Its amazingly plush, silken texture carries all these shimmering flavors to a very long and fragrant finish. This jaw-dropping expression of 2020 is simply stunning. The blend this year is 40% Cabernet Franc and 60% Merlot, due to be aged 18-22 months in French oak barriques, 100% new, and two new foudres. The wine has pH of 3.65 pH and an alcohol of 14.5%.”
