Balancing its super-ripe fruits with its ebullient personality, this ’17 Chianti Classico is pure pleasure. Fistfuls of brambly berries and luscious cherries mingle with underbrush, mint, licorice, violet petals, new leather, blood orange zest, and a smear of blackberry jam in this scrumptious Chianti Classico. Fine-grained tannins, a sweet inner lift, and vivid acidity form a delicious whole in Castello dei Rampolla’s drink-me-now ’17 Chianti Classico, but make no mistake, this wine will drink beautifully over the medium term. This biodynamically grown and vinified Chianti Classico, a blend of 90% Sangiovese with the remainder split between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, spends three months fermenting in concrete; the wine ages for a year in barrel, followed by six months in bottle prior to release.

Fontodi Chianti Classico 2013 750ml

Price: $49.99
Special Price: $39.99
Nimble and juicy, this ’13 Chianti Classico seamlessly melds its pure red fruits with crushed rocks, saddle leather, smoke and flower petals. This is a charming wine that shows surprising complexity as it builds to a vibrant, supple finish. Fontodi practices organic agriculture and non-interventionist protocol, relying on the estate's exceptional southern position in a natural amphitheater composed of marl soil, which allows the grapes to ripen perfectly and the estate to create wines of great character and structure. This mono-varietal Sangiovese derives from multiple vineyard sites; the grapes ferment for two weeks with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks, and the wine ages in barrels for eighteen months before bottling.

Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants:
“Honestly, I did not believe there could be a wine that could surpass the 2015 release, we still have many clients asking for the wine today. However, the 2016
Badia
a Passignano lives up to the vintage hype. For IWM, it is not Tignanello or even Solaia that should be watched, it is this Chianti Classico Gran Selezione that demands attention, as few wines have improved so greatly over the past few years and are delivered at this price point. It is a serious crowd pleaser, jaw-droppingly delicious right out of the bottle with four years of age. Ripe black cherries, even macerated cherries, plum and once you get past the generous fruit, you begin to experience wild herbs, cedar, earth and stony minerality. Stunningly elegant and inviting with its almost creamy texture, but there is balance with freshness and acidity. It has plenty of years ahead of it but hard to resist today. This is a MUST stop on the Chianti trail with dinner at Osteria di Passignano - right there in the historic vineyards. Simply magical – that goes for the wine, vineyard and restaurant.”
