A glowing dark ruby red, this ’08 Brunello explodes with wonderful aromas of cherries, plums, and raspberries with lovely notes of spice. The powerful and finessed palate reveals telltale Col d'Orcia Brunello silky tannins and a complex, concentrated palate fresh ripe red fruits, earth, spice and cypress, all ending with a long structured finish. The Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino 2008 is a direct translation of the estate’s traditional methods of production. The grapes are sourced from their south-southwest facing vineyards on a hill overlooking the Orica River at 1,000 feet above sea level. Col d’Orcia uses large Slovenian oak barrels to age the wine for three years before the wine goes into bottle, and once in bottle, the wine ages in the cellar for at least one year before release.

The Col d’Orcia estate participated in the First Exhibition of Italian wines in 1933, showcasing three vintages of Brunello, and its presence in Montalcino dates back to the early eighteenth century. In 1973 the estate adopted its new name under the ownership of Count Alberto Marone Cinzano (of the famous Cinzano vermouth family), who initiated efforts to validate the inherent quality of Brunello di Montalcino. Count Francesco Marone Cinzano is the current president of the estate, and Edoardo Virano governs production, with the assistance of in-house enologist Pablo Härri and consultant Maurizio Castelli.
The estate comprises 540 hectares, 142 of which are planted to vines. Ongoing research is pursued, the main objective of which is to maximize the quality of the fruit grown. In cooperation with the University of Florence and Professor Attilio Scienza of the University of Milan, Col d’Orcia’s viticultural staff studies planting systems, clonal selection, and the determination of the terroir best suited to particular vines. The assessments precipitate further developments in the quality and typicity expressed throughout Col d’Orcia’s profile.
