The nose presents a profusion of red, blue and black fruit and a mélange of spices; these notes coat the palate with rich red cherries, blackberry compote, and baking spices. This muscular, low production’11 Pommard has immense dry extract and velvety tannins and a powerful palate. The Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru, Comte Armand’s “tete du cuvée,” a blend of grapes ranging from 25 to 80 years old from different vineyard plots within the historic monopole, can be easily confused for a Grand Cru in most vintages--for example, this one. Offering a concentrated core of succulent fruits, a dusting of spice, a thrum of earth and a long, lingering finish, this ’11 Clos des Epeneaux is a must-have Pommard.
