Rare Aldo Conterno Baroli Sale!
December 11, 2017
A Note from Sergio

Some of the world's greatest wines come from Barolo. It's easy to talk about a vineyard's terroir, what the soil is made of and how the tectonic plates shifted to offer up younger earth in one vineyard and older earth in another. It's easy to talk about how those fresh soils grow grapes that make graceful wines, while those older soils grow grapes that make austere wines. It's easy to measure a ten-degree temperature difference from the bottom of a slope to the top, and to show a correlation between the opulence of the wines at the bottom and the finesse of the wines at the top. But you don't really get Barolo's magic of nature and of human ingenuity until you visit, and the more you visit, the more it floors you. Barolo is beautiful beyond words, and its true beauty shines when its wines come from winemakers who know and love Barolo's swirling hills.

Aldo Conterno was one of the great masters of Barolo, which makes sense given that his brother, Giovanni, and their father, Giacomo, were two more. Aldo, who passed away in 2012, spent his whole life in Barolo and knew it intimately. While often called a modernist, Aldo was one of those winemakers who defied easy categorization--he was neither strictly traditional, nor was he modernist--and whose wines have been so good that easy definitions cease to matter. Aldo's wines and his continuing estate ensure Aldo's legacy. The wines of Poderi Aldo Conterno show how, just as Aldo's dad trained him, he trained his sons. From vintages past to vintages current, Aldo Conterno's wines are true to the estate and to the integrity of this great producer.

Today, I'm very proud to present twenty years of great Aldo Conterno Baroli. You'll find the estate's "basic" Barolo Bussia; its superb trio of cru Baroli--Romirasco, Colonnello, and Cicala; its unique Barolo Vigna Romirasco; and its legendary Barolo Granbussia. Some of these wines are in stock; others are pre-arrival; all are outrageous and offered with special pricing. Bringing Aldo Conterno's Baroli to you makes me very happy--they're outstanding Italian wines from an outstanding Italian family!

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Romirasco 2012 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Romirasco 2012 750ml
Price: $199.00

Rich, opulent and textured, the ’12 Barolo Romirasco unfurls on the palate with a tantalizing mouth-feel. Brooding red and blue fruits waft with grilled herbs, peppery spices, potpourri and licorice in this dense, full-bodied Romirasco bottling. Drinkable soon after release, this wine has the bright acidity and hefty tannins that suggest it’ll age beautifully. Aldo Conterno previously produced the Romirasco Barolo only in vintages without the ideal conditions necessary for the estate’s famed Granbussia, but this Barolo's incredible appeal and structure made it a yearly release. Crafted from fruit grown on vines aged 50 to 55 years old, this wine ages in Slavonian oak casks for thirty months before bottling. more info
