Beautiful Wines for the New Year from Castello dei Rampolla, Fiorano, and Valdicava!
December 29, 2017
A Note from Sergio

One of the new friends I made this year is a wonderful woman named Tory. An interior designer by trade, Tory is also a world traveler--a citizen of the world who has explored Easter Island, lived in South Africa, strolled through the cherry blossoms in Tokyo, bathed in the hot springs of Iceland, eaten the ceviche in Lisbon, and never seems to stop being alive to the wonder of it all. Whenever Tory gets to the last bit of wine in the bottle, she pours it in her guests' glass and says, "Have the love!" This thing--love--is important to wine; in fact, it's why I do what I do.

More than selling wine, more than teaching people why and how to enjoy wine, and more than introducing wine drinkers to new wines and new producers, I work to share my love of wine. This love provides the foundation for everything we do at Italian Wine Merchants. Whether it's educating people about what makes Italian wine special, showing them how to put wine with food to create a peak experience, or helping them build a wine cellar that will bring them joy on a basis that's daily, weekly, yearly, and longer, we're sharing our love.

Today is the day before New Year's Eve weekend, so it feels like the right time to tell you that love drives me to do what I do: love of wine, love of the people who make wine, and love of those of you who share my passion. Today, I'm very proud to present three wines that I love, and I know you will too. First, there's Castello dei Rampolla's absolutely luscious 2011 Vigna d'Alceo, a biodynamic Super Tuscan that is rich and exquisite. There's a singular vintage Malvasia from Fiorano, the original estate owned by Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi, the Prince of Venosa. And there's a perfectly aged Valdicava Brunello Riserva that's begging you to enjoy it.

Share the love of these wines with people you love, this year and next!

Fiorano No. 25 Bianco 1986
Fiorano No. 25 Bianco 1986 750ml
Price: $149.00

This ‘86 Bianco gleams with an unfiltered copper glow, and the nose bends the spectrum, moving from earth to fruit, then with an interlude between sniffs, earth to spice. Tasting reveals layers of fruit, spice and earth all in harmony, with a balancing act of honeycomb, nuts, and spiced pears playing the lead. This mature white wine defies what we think we know about Italian whites, offering a tremendous drinking experience for wine connoisseurs; despite three decades of maturity, this powerful wine opens with hours of aeration to show a kaleidoscopic palate. Fiorano Bianco, crafted from organically grown Malvasia di Candia, is an unusual, rare white that stands the test of time and offers a picture of meticulous, organic winemaking as it was practiced decades ago. more info
