This is one seductive, beguiling wine. Juicy red and black fruits mingle with fresh-cut herbs, crushed violets, licorice and sun-warmed earth in this medium-bodied, caressing ’11 Échézeaux. Showing Échézeaux’s typical roundness and sensuality, this ’11 bottling from Jean Grivot nonetheless has the tannic structure, acidic nerve and mineral drive to keep it drinking for years. This wine manages both to be beautifully delineated and powerful, crossing the palate with a muscular density and leaving copious dry extract as it builds to a lingering finish; it’s a stellar effort and one that true Burgundy connoisseurs will adore. Deriving from the estate’s two-acre Échézeaux parcel, the grapes for this wine fermented for just over two weeks, and the wine aged in oak, about half new.

The Grivot family has been making wine in Vosne-Romaneé for five generations, founding the estate just before the French Revolution. Currently helmed by Etienne Grivot, the 37-acre estate has expanded its holdings beyond Vosne-Romanée and into Nuits-Saint-Georges, Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg, sporting vines around fifty years of age and wines from 22 appellations, eighteen of which are red. Domaine Jean Grivot strives to make wines of place--pure, telling evocations of terroir. To this end, Etienne and his team do assiduous, meticulous work in the vineyards as well as in the cellar, using non-interventionist practices to craft deeply personal, even spiritual, Burgundies. Since 2000, the estate has been on an upward trajectory, with each vintage showing finer detail, quality and precision than the preceding one, thus cementing Jean Grivot’s place in the hearts--and the cellars--of Burgundy lovers.
