Glorious 2007 Guado al Tasso, a Benchmark Vintage of a Superb Super Tuscan!
February 12, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Bolgheri explodes with outstanding winemakers--this tiny town is, of course, the birthplace of the Super-Tuscan genre and home to Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Le Macchiole, and Grattamacco, to name but a few estates. Among the crowded field of Bolgheri Super-Tuscan wines, the flagship from Piero Antinori's Guado al Tasso is one of the finest. Though Guado al Tasso's inaugural 1990 vintage meant that Antinori was a Bolgheri latecomer, this wine quickly gained ground, making ardent fans around the world. Guado al Tasso, whose name means "Badger's Ford," may not be the glitziest Super Tuscan on the market, but it's consistently delicious and it consistently over-delivers on its relatively modest pricing.

One of the things that sets the Antinori family apart is their willingness to change, to adapt wines, to grow, and to strive to be ever better, every vintage. Today, I'm very proud to present a new allocation of the broad-shouldered and luscious 2007 Guado al Tasso, a powerful, elegant wine. With the 2007 vintage, the Guado al Tasso team decided to replace the Syrah component with Cabernet Franc in its remarkable flagship wine, making this Bolgheri Super Tuscan even finer. As luck would have it, the growing year of 2007 favored Cabernet grapes. Whether that means that the Antinori family is prescient or lucky, I don't know. One thing I am sure of, however, is that today's '07 Guado al Tasso is a beauty. It's perfect right now, and you're going to love it.

Upon release, the ripe vintage 2007 Guado al Tasso was praised for its bold, intense and delicious profile. Now with more than a decade of age, this wine is firing on all cylinders, layering its rich frutti di bosco with grilled herbs, licorice, melted chocolate, exotic spices, and cigar wrapper; tertiary notes of black tea, potpourri, and truffles murmur in the background. Tannins mellowed, the wine glides with a velvety texture into its finish that’s accented by crystalline minerals and savory herbs. A blend that shifts with every vintage, the 2007 Guado is about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. For the 2007 Guado al Tasso, Antinori fermented each varietal separately for 15 to 20 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged each varietal separately for 18 months in new barrique before blending and letting the wine rest in bottle for ten months before release. more info
