A Note from Sergio
There's a way the Montalcino air smells on a crisp winter morning--cold, and clean and thrumming with a hush of life. There's the way it smells on a bright autumn morning, the pointed smell of cypress blending with the warm smell of chestnuts ripening, a swirl of wood-smoke cutting through it. There's its smell in the spring, a blend of wet earth, green tender shoots and the promise of poppies that will bloom everywhere soon. And there's its summer scent, cherries and peaches ripening, the bees droning, the dry scent of grass going gold in the hot sun. Open a really good bottle of Brunello di Montalcino, and these elements will unfold in the air, like so many invisible genies.
Today, I'm delighted to offer a really good bottle of Brunello--even better, it's a bottle that costs a fraction of what you expect to pay for a really good bottle of Brunello. One of IWM's favorite longtime producers, Col d'Orcia consistently makes wines that evoke their terroir, that transmit that ineffable Montalcino terroir, and that could be nothing but what they are: beautifully wrought Sangiovese Grosso from Montalcino. Today's bottling is from the highly touted 2010 vintage, and it's less than $40 a bottle. I can't wait to hear how much you like it.
With this Brunello bottling, I'm pleased to present another affordable beauty, Ada Nada's brooding Barbaresco cru Cichin; it's under $45 and over-delivers at this price point. Both this wine and the Col d'Orcia are wines you want to lay down, so you can drink some soon and some way down the road. Finally, I'm pleased to present a collector Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Clos des Papes; this 2012 is a beast right now--powerful, big, and intense--but it'll be a gentle giant in a few years' time.
